Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

 
 
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE           C11-191537
As previously released, on September 10th, 2011 at approximately 2:40 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident which occurred in the area of College Avenue and Aikins Street.
 
The victim, a 15 year old male, has since succumbed to his injuries.  The name of the victim will not be released.      
 
The Homicide Unit is continuing with this investigation.

COMMERICAL ROBBERIES- ARREST        C11-193711
On September 12th 2011 between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Units responded to the following 5 separate commercial robberies. In all instances the lone suspect male demanded cash from the clerks and had fled prior to police arrival.  There were no reported injuries.  
 
-          a grocery store within the 500 block of Notre Dame Avenue
-          a restaurant within the 600 block of Balmoral Street
-          a restaurant within the 700 block of Sherbrook Street
-          a grocery store within the 800 block of Sargent Avenue
-          a pharmacy within the 700 block of Sherbrook Street
 
Then on September 13th 2011, at approximately 12:15 a.m. a lone suspect male attended to a convenience store within the 500 block of Pacific Avenue where he jumped the counter attempted to obtain cash from the register.  A struggle ensued between the 35 year old male clerk, culminating in the clerk chasing down the suspect and holding him for arriving officers.   
 
Christopher Glenn SCARTH, 31 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in these incidents:
 
-          Robbery X6
-          Fail to comply with conditions of recognizance
-          Breach of probation
 
SCARTH was detained in custody. 
 
 
FIREARM SEARCH WARRANT- ARRESTS    C11-193368
On September 13th, 2011 at approximately 12:30 a.m., patrolling members of the Street Crime Unit observed a male riding a bicycle in the area of Mountain Avenue and McGregor Street.  Upon seeing police, the male immediately took evasive action and officers observed him throw something to the ground just prior dismounting his bike.  A very brief foot chase ensued resulting in the male being taken into custody in the rear lane within the 600 block of College Avenue. 
 
Officers recovered two firearms and ammunition at the scene.
 
As a result of the continued investigation by officers, and with the assistance of National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST), both handguns were linked to a break and enter in Powerview, Manitoba in July 2011. 
 
An 18 year old male, who was detained in custody, has been charged with a number of firearm offences, including: 
 
- Possess weapon for dangerous purpose x 2
- Careless storage x 2
- Unauthorized possession: no registration x 2
- Possess firearm contrary to court order x 2
- Possess ammunition contrary to court order x 2
- Fail to comply with probation order x 3
- Possess firearm obtained by commission of offence x 2
- Possess restricted firearm with ammunition x 2
- Possession of goods obtained by crime x 2
 
An outstanding warrant to arrest for failing to comply with conditions of probation order was also executed.
 
 
STOLEN VEHICLE- ARREST               R11-86404
On September 7th, 2011 during the evening hours a Saturn automobile was stolen from a parking lot in the 200 block of Talbot Avenue. 
 
On September 13th, 2011 at approximately 3:40 a.m. a patrolling Division 13 General Patrol Unit observed a suspicious vehicle in the area of Parr Street and Mountain Avenue. 
 
This vehicle was observed to disobey a number of stop signs and subsequently fled from the police unit.  A number of units attended to the area and located the abandoned vehicle, later determined to be the above noted stolen vehicle, in the area of Seymour Street and Sinclair Avenue. 
 
A canine unit attended the vehicle and immediately began tracking. Within minutes, a suspect male was located hiding within a rear yard of a residence in the 400 block of Seymour.
 
A 36 year old male will be facing charges of possess property obtained by crime under $5000 and flight from police officer. He has been released to attend court at a later date. 
 
 
FIREARMS SEARCH WARRANT- ARRESTS          C11-193368
On September 12th, 2011 at approximately 9:30 p.m., as a result of a continued investigation members of the Organized Crime Unit, with the assistance from the Tactical Support Team, General Patrol Members and NWEST, a firearms search warrant was executed at a residence within the 600 block of Langside Street.   
 
An air pistol, an assault rifle with ammunition as well as a small amount of marihuana and cocaine was seized from the residence. 
 
Robert Alexander William DANIELS, 24 years of Winnipeg has been charged with a number of offences for his alleged involvement in this incident, including: 
 
- Possession of cocaine; 
- Possession of marihuana;
- Breach firearms regulation;
- Possess weapon for a dangerous purpose x 2;
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm (license);
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm (reg. cert.);
- Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm/ammunition;
- Possession of weapon obtained by crime;
- Possess firearm while prohibited X3
- Possess property obtained by crime under $5,000.
 
DANIELS has been detained in custody.
 
A 26 year old female will be facing a number of charges in relation to this incident. She was released on a promise to appear.
