Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

  

 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31st, 2010
11:00 a.m.
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY                                    C10-295351
On December 30th, 2010 at approximately 6:45 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members attended to a business located in the 900 block of McPhillips Street for a report of robbery that had just occurred. 
 
The investigation has revealed that 2 males had entered the business and demanded money after indicating they had a weapon.  Both suspects fled after obtaining a small amount of cash.
 
The two male suspects were described as: white, medium build, 5'9" to 5'10". One was wearing a dark coloured hoodie, and the second wearing a white and black checkered jacket with a black scarf around his face.
 
A Winnipeg Police Service K9 unit assisted in a search of the area, however, no suspects were located. The incident is being investigated by Division 13 detectives.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERIES                                    C10-286110
The Winnipeg Police Service is investigating a number of commercial robberies that occurred in during the month of December. One suspect is believed responsible for the following incidents:
 
  1. December 17th in the 1400 block of Main Street.
  2. December 18th in the 2500 block of Main Street.
  3. December 19th, 23rd and 26th at the same business in 1700 block of Henderson Hwy.
All 3 businesses were fast food restaurants. The suspect is described as a male in his late 20's or early 30's with a medium build, approximately 5'8" to 6'0" with a medium build.
 
 
 
The Winnipeg Police Service is asking the public's assistance in identifying the individual in the photograph above. Any one with information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Major Crime Unit at 986-6219, or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28th, 2010

11:15 A.M.
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN C10-293091
On Monday, December 27th, 2010 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members, along with Emergency Services Responders attended to the intersection of Dakota Street and Bishop Grandin Boulevard for a report of a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. 
 
A 22 year old male pedestrian was transported to the hospital in unstable condition and he has since been upgraded to stable condition, sustaining minor injuries to his upper body.
 
The initial investigation has revealed that the pedestrian had attempted to cross the street when he was struck by a vehicle travelling westbound, on a green light, on Bishop Grandin Boulevard.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the East District Station. 
 
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind motorists to be mindful of potentially icy road conditions as the weather changes and wish everyone safe travels throughout the remainder of the holiday season.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST             C10-293312
On December 27th, 2010, shortly after 11:00 p.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Salter Street and Flora Avenue in an erratic manner, narrowly avoiding several collisions. Having observed this vehicle's driving, Members of the Winnipeg Police Service subsequently stopped this vehicle in the area of the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue.
 
As a result of this incident Christopher Louis MCDONALD, 21 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Drive Impaired, Fail to Provide Breath Samples and Drive While Disqualified.

ELECTRONIC CONTROL DEVICE CARTRIDGE LOST   C10-239464
Sometime overnight on Monday, December 27th to Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 a cartridge (and its pouch) for a Taser™ electronic control device became dislodged and separated from a uniform patrol member's service duty belt while the officer was on duty in Division 11 (Downtown Winnipeg). 
 
The electronic control device unit itself was not lost.  This cartridge contains probes on wires which extend when the device is discharged.  Efforts are ongoing to locate the cartridge.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to advise that the cartridge could pose a risk of harm to the public.  If the cartridge was to be picked up by an unsuspecting person and carried in a pocket, a build-up of static energy could activate the cartridge, causing the probes to be propelled.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to take this opportunity to advise the public to contact police immediately if the cartridge and/or pouch are located.
 
 
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION             C10-293547
On Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 shortly after 9:30 a.m. Emergency Services Members responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision that had occurred in the area of Fermor Avenue and Lagimodiere Boulevard. 
 
Upon arrival, officers located a truck which appeared to have rolled over the boulevard near East Mint Place and Lagimodiere Boulevard. 
 
Winnipeg Fire Department members extricated an adult male from the vehicle.  This male was subsequently transported to the hospital in stable condition. 
 
Officers have learned that a Ford truck was travelling southbound on Lagimodiere Boulevard when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over and  come to rest in the northbound lane of Lagimodiere Boulevard.  
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the East District Station. 

All roadways have been re-opened.
 
PLEASE NOTE: Road conditions are reported to be extremely slippery in the area.  City of Winnipeg Public Works will be sanding the roadways.  Please use extra caution while driving and reduce your speed.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  MONDAY, DECEMBER 27th, 2010

 

COMMERCIAL ROBBERIES- ARREST              C10-292424

On Sunday, December 26th, 2010 at approximately 3:00 p.m., Members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a retail store in the 300 block of Portage Avenue for a report of a robbery that had just occurred. 

Upon arrival officers learned that a male suspect, armed with a knife, had entered the store and proceeded to the cash register area.  This suspect then confronted a 20 year old female clerk and demanded money.  During the robbery attempt another employee fled the store and contacted police.  This prompted the suspect to flee the store as well, empty handed.

There were no injuries to any of the employees as a result of this incident. 
 
Patrolling Uniform Officers observed a male that matched the description of the suspect in the area of Broadway Avenue and Hargrave Street.  This male, who was still in possession of the knife, was arrested without incident.
 
Further investigation by members of the Major Crimes Unit revealed that this same male was allegedly responsible for the following robberies:
 
- December 9th, 2010 at 6:30 p.m., a grocery store in the 200 block of Lilac Street
- December 11th, 2010 at 2:45 p.m., a grocery store in the 1st 100 block of Sherbrook Street
- December 18th, 2010 at 6:50 p.m., a restaurant in the 1st 100 block of Osborne Street
- December 21st, 2010 at 4:50 p.m., a business in the 200 block of Carlton Avenue
- December 23rd, 2010 at 4:00 p.m., a gas bar in the 300 block of Wardlaw Avenue
- December 24th, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., a gas bar in the 1st 100 block of Marion Street
 
During the commission of the above noted robberies, the suspect was armed with a knife and received approximately $3000 in cash.  No injuries were sustained by any of the employees and none of the stolen money has been recovered.
 
Robert James MAKSYMCHUK, 40 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
 
- Robbery with Weapon x 7
- Wear Disguise with Intent x 2
 
At the time of his arrest MAKSYMCHUK was wanted on an outstanding warrant for Suspension of ParoleHe has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 26th, 2010  

 
FESTIVE CHECK STOP PROGRAM- FORMAL CHARGES LAID
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST             C10-275211
On Friday December 3rd, 2010, at 7:00 a.m. it is alleged that a male was operating a vehicle Westbound on Regent Avenue near Madeline Street at a high rate of speed.  This male attempted to pass a vehicle travelling at the speed limit by going into the Eastbound lane and subsequently struck the side of the vehicle being passed.  The male fled the scene but was located a short distance away, and was arrested by Winnipeg Police Service Members.
 
As a result of this incident Michael James GRANT, 19 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Drive Impaired, Drive Over 80 mgs%, Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident, Drive without a Licence and Operate a Vehicle without Owner's Consent.

 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST                C10-275872
On Saturday December 4th, 2010, shortly before 1:00 a.m. it is alleged that a male was operating his vehicle in the area of St Matthews Avenue and Empress Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident Cameron DONNELLY, 48 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST               C10-275930
On Saturday December 4th, 2010, shortly after 2:00 a.m. it is alleged that a male was operating his vehicle Westbound on Portage Avenue near Strathcona Street in an erratic manner.  The vehicle was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident Bennie HARDER, 23 years of Morden has been charged with Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST               C10-275975
On Saturday December 4th, 2010, shortly before 3:00 a.m. it is alleged that a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Portage Avenue and Minto Street in an erratic manner.  The vehicle was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident Ryan Allan HUSTON, 26 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  SUNDAY, DECEMBER 26th, 2010  

 
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- ARREST           C10-291445
As previously released, on Friday, December 24th, 2010 shortly after 5:40 p.m., Emergency Services Responders were dispatched to Fife Street between Mapleglen Drive and Inkster Boulevard regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.  Upon arrival a seriously injured 66 year old male pedestrian was located.  This male victim, whose identity will not be released, was transported to the hospital in critical condition and has since succumbed to his injuries. 
 
The investigation by numerous Uniform and Central Traffic Unit members has revealed that a male pedestrian had parked his vehicle in the 1300 block of Fife Street and he proceeded to cross Fife Street when he was struck by a car that had been travelling southbound on Fife Street from Mapleglen Drive.  After striking the victim, it is alleged the driver of the car reversed the vehicle and then drove around the victim, fleeing the scene.
 
A number of witnesses in the area immediately attended to the injured victim and notified police.
 
On December 25th, 2010 at approximately 2:30 p.m., acting on information provided by Division 13 Uniform Officers, Traffic Investigators located and arrested a 44 year old male at a residence near Manor House Court and Maberley Road.
 
Christopher Ronald PEEBLES, 44 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences:
 
-          Criminal Negligence Cause Death
-          Fail to Remain at the Scene of Accident Cause Death
 
PEEBLES has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit and anyone who may have witnessed this collision that has not yet spoken with police is asked to call 986-6271. 
 
 
FRAUD INVESTIGATION- ARREST     C10-289708
As a result of the keen observations of bank employees the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit was alerted to bank accounts that were being fraudulently obtained.
 
An investigation commenced which revealed that between December 17th and December 22nd, 2010, a 26 year old male was in possession of stolen identity information which included forged Drivers Licences and Social Insurance cards.  This suspect male allegedly used this stolen identity information to open bank accounts at several banks within the City of Winnipeg.
 
On December 22nd, 2010 shortly before 3:00 p.m., Commercial Crime Unit Detectives located and arrested the 26 year old male as he exited a bank in south Winnipeg.  Numerous forged pieces of identification were seized and included information from individuals from the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Winnipeg.  At this time, it is still unknown how the identity information was stolen and/ or obtained. 
 
Drame MAHAMADOU, 26 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
 
- Utter Forged Document (X 4)
- Possession of Identity information (X 4)
- Personation (X 3)
- Possession of Counterfeit Mark (X 5)
- Fraud Under
- Public Mischief
 
MAHAMADOU has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
This investigation is still ongoing and it is anticipated that more charges may be pending.
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON INVESTIGATION   C10-286869
On Saturday, December 18th, 2010 shortly after 7:00 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members attended to an intersection near Hespeler Avenue and Silvia Street for a report of 75 year old male victim that had been assaulted by a male suspect armed with a baseball bat. 
 
The male victim received treatment for various upper body injuries as a result of this assault. 
 
This investigation is on going by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit.  Investigators are requesting that a witness who had come to the aid of the victim immediately after the incident to contact them at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24TH, 2010

 
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- UPDATE          C10-290723
On Thursday, December 23rd, 2010 shortly after 5:00 p.m. Emergency Services Responders were dispatched to the intersection of Pacific Avenue and McPhillips Street for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 53 year old female pedestrian. This female victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition and has since succumbed to her injuries. The female victim's identity will not be released.
 
Officers have learned that a 2005 white full sized van was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and McPhillips Street waiting to make a right hand turn onto Northbound McPhillips Street.  As the traffic light changed to green the female pedestrian began crossing McPhillips Street travelling Westbound on the north side of Pacific Avenue and was subsequently struck by the van. 
 
This van failed to stop after colliding with the victim and continued driving northbound on McPhillips Street. Witnesses in the area immediately notified police. 
 
A 34 year old male has been arrested and will be facing the following charges:
 
- Fail to Remain at Scene of Accident Cause Death
- Criminal Negligence Cause Death
 
This investigation is still ongoing by members of the Central Traffic Unit. Investigators are requesting anyone who witnessed the collision that have not yet spoken with police, or anyone who may have seen this vehicle before or after the collision to contact them at 986-6271.

IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST            C10-290866
On December 23rd, 2010, shortly before 9:00 p.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Elgin Avenue and Juba Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 67 year old male will be facing charges of Drive Impaired, Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST               C10-290912
On December 23rd, 2010, shortly after 10:00 p.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Pacific Avenue and Juba Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program. 
 
As a result of this incident a 42 year old male will be facing charges of Drive Impaired, Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST            C10-290916
On December 23rd, 2010, shortly after 10:00 p.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Kennedy Street and Balmoral Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 37 year old male will be facing charges of Drive Impaired and Refuse Breath Samples.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST        C10-290917
On December 23rd, 2010, shortly after 10:00 p.m. a female was operating her vehicle in the area of Notre Dame Avenue and Midland Street when she was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 48 year old female will be facing charges of Drive Impaired and Refuse Breath Samples.
 
The female's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST            C10-291005
On December 24th, 2010, shortly before 1:00 a.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Brookside Boulevard and Inkster Boulevard at an extremely high rate of speed when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 24 year old male will be facing charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

Officers have learned that a 2005 white full sized van was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and McPhillips Street waiting to make a right hand turn onto Northbound McPhillips Street.  As the traffic light changed to green the female pedestrian began crossing McPhillips Street travelling Westbound on the north side of Pacific Avenue and was subsequently struck by the van. 
 
This van failed to stop after colliding with the victim and continued driving northbound on McPhillips Street. Witnesses in the area immediately notified police. 
 
A 34 year old male has been arrested and will be facing criminal charges.
 
This investigation is still ongoing by members of the Central Traffic Unit. Investigators are requesting anyone who witnessed the collision that have not yet spoken with police, or anyone who may have seen this vehicle before or after the collision to contact them at 986-6271.

DRUG INVESTIGATION – ARRESTS C10-289576
On December 22, 2010, after an extended investigation, members of the Drug/Vice Unit, with the assistance of Street Crimes Unit and Uniform members executed Controlled Drug and Substance Act search warrants for three residences and two vehicles in the Downtown and North End areas of Winnipeg.
 
As a result, officers located grow operations within residences in the 600 block of Victor Street, 700 block of Selkirk Avenue and 700 block of Flora Avenue. Collectively, officers seized 1032 cannabis marihuana plants in various stages of growth. In addition, officers located ½ lbs. of packaged marihuana. The total value of the seized drugs is estimated at $1,115,000.00.
 
The investigations also led to officers seizing various grow operation equipment valued at $15,000.00.
 
Three individuals were found within the residences and arrested. A 53 year old male, 47 year old male and a 46 year old female are facing several drug related offences including theft of services.
 
They have been released on a Promise to Appear.    
  
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON – ARREST C10-258479
As previously released, on November 10th, 2010 at approximately 7:30 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Portage Avenue and Langside Street. Attending members located a 34 year old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body.
 
The victim was treated and eventually released from hospital.
 
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit. It is alleged that the suspect confronted the victim and produced a firearm. The victim, fearing for his safety fled the area on foot. It was at this time the suspect discharged the firearm striking the victim.  
 
On December 21, 2010, the suspect was located and arrested in the downtown area. Upon being arrested, the suspect was found to be in possession of a loaded sawed off shotgun.  
 
Daniel Jurkuch MAYEN, 22 years has been charged with numerous firearm offences which include: Aggravated Assault and Discharge Firearm with Intent to Wound, Maim Disfigure.   
 
He remains in custody.
 
 
STABBING INCIDENT UPDATE – ARRESTS C10-289619
As previously released, on December 22, 2010, at approximately 8:30 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident in the area of the 1000 block of Selkirk Avenue.
 
A 19 year old male suffering from stab wounds to the upper and lower body was located and subsequently conveyed to hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.
 
The investigation conducted by District 3 Detectives has revealed that the victim, including a 17 and 18 year old female were socializing in a suite. An argument ensued at which time the females came up with a plan to rob and assault the victim.
 
At one point, the 17 year old female stabbed the victim to the lower body. The 18 year old female subsequently took possession of the same knife and proceeded to stab the victim several more times to the upper body. The victim's wallet was stolen at the time of the incident. The victim fled from the suite to a nearby residence at which time emergency services was notified.  
 
Both suspects were located and arrested in the area. They have been charged with Robbery with a Weapon and detained.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-289870
On December 22, 2010, shortly after 3:00 p.m., a 49 year old male collided with a parked vehicle and a fence in the area of Sandale Drive. Winnipeg Police Service General Patrol members attended the scene and arrested the male.
 
As a result of this incident, a 49 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/% and Drive without Licence.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-290116
On December 22, 2010, shortly after 9:00 p.m., a 40 year old male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Wardlaw Avenue and Osborne Street. Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop members stopped the vehicle and arrested the male.
 
As a result of this incident a 40 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/% and Drive without Licence, Drive with Open Liquor and warrants for driving infractions.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-290239
On December 23, 2010, shortly after 12:30 a.m., a 27 year old male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Pembina Highway and Nesbitt Bay. Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop members stopped the vehicle and arrested the male.
 
As a result of this incident, a 27 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid
 
  
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-290252
On December 23, 2010, shortly after 12:45 a.m., a 21 year old male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of River Avenue and Osborne Street. Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop members stopped the vehicle and arrested the male.
 
As a result of this incident a 21 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid
