Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 PUBLIC ADVISORY - FRAUD INVESTIGATION R11-89275 C11-194188 Since September 13th, 2011, the Winnipeg Police Service has been alerted to and is currently investigating three incidents involving fraudulent telephone calls being made to unsuspecting residents. The investigation has revealed that the suspect(s) have been targeting elderly female members of the Polish community. The suspect appears to speak Polish fluently requesting money from the victim due to an urgent matter. On one occasion, the victim was defrauded of $5000.00. The Winnipeg Police Service is encouraging members of the public to discuss this scam with friends and or family members who they feel may be vulnerable to these pressure tactics. The investigation is continuing by members of the District 3 Crime Unit. Anyone who has received a call of this nature or has information regarding the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at 986-2848. A call trace (*57) should immediately be activated upon the caller hanging up in order to assist our officers with their investigation.
