Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Monday, September 12th, 2011

12:30 p.m.
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                          C11-192996
On Monday, September 12th, 2011 at approximately 12:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a residence within the 200 block of Jamison Avenue for a report of a working fire. 
 
Upon arrival, a number of fire crews were already in attendance attempting to extinguish the fire.  Estimated damage to the building and contents is in excess of $60,000.
 
At this point in the investigation the cause of the fire is believed to be suspicious in nature. 
 
The Arson Strike Force Unit is continuing with this investigation. Anyone who has any information is asked to contact them at 986-6813 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
CDSA SEARCH WARRANT- ARREST      R11-87023
On September 9th, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m., investigators from the Organized Crime Unit, with the assistance of members of the Tactical Support Team, Division 11 General Patrol and the Canine Unit executed a controlled drug and substances act search warrant at a residence within the 900 block of Banning Street.
 
An adult male was located within the residence and was taken into custody without incident. The following items have been seized: 
 
- Approximately 440 marihuana plants valued at $496,000.00, along with $7,000.00 worth of grow operation equipment.
 
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Green Team assisted in dismantling the grow operation.  A 41 year old male, who has been released on a promise to appear, will be facing the following charges: 
- Production of a controlled substance- Cannabis Marihuana
- Possessing substance for the purpose of trafficking- Cannabis Marihuana
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                        C11-192997
On September 12th, 2011 just after 12:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a report of a vehicle on fire in a parking lot near Greenway Crescent West.
 
Upon arrival officers observed a Dodge Caravan that was completely engulfed in flames.  A second vehicle, an Eagle Vision, which had been parked beside the van was also completely destroyed. 
 
Damage estimates to both vehicles as well as some fencing is valued at $8000.00. 
 
Several police units including the Air1 and the canine unit searched the area for an older model four door vehicle that was seen leaving the area at the time of the fire, with negative results.  
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force Unit.  Anyone who has any information is asked to contact investigators at 986-6813 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
STABBING UPDATE- HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION                C11-191537
As previously released, on September 10th, 2011 at approximately 2:40 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident which occurred in the area of College Avenue and Aikins Street.
 
Attending members located a 15 year old male suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body.  Officers provided first aid to the victim until which time paramedic services attended and continued with medical care.
 
The investigation has revealed that the victim, while in the company of another male came into contact with a group of males.  The victim became involved in a physical confrontation at which time he was stabbed, causing serious upper body injuries.
 
The victim was conveyed to hospital in critical condition and investigators have been notified that he is not expected to live.  
 
Members of the Homicide Unit are continuing with this investigation.  Anyone who has information about this incident or the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
COMMERICAL ROBBERY- ARREST         C11-192408
On September 11th, 2011 at approximately 3:15 a.m. a number of Winnipeg Police Service units responded to a convenience store near Main Street and Bannerman Avenue for a report of commercial robbery that had just occurred.
 
Prior to arrival officers learned that a lone male had entered the store and demanded cash from the store clerk before fleeing. 
 
A patrolling canine unit located the suspect male nearby, where he was taken into custody without incident. 
 
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit, with the assistance of general patrol officers, the same male suspect is believed to be responsible for an incident occurring at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a bar located within the 1600 block of Main Street.  During this incident an intoxicated male was removed from the bar by on site security and staff.  
 
The suspect attended to the parking lot and entered stolen a Chevrolet Malibu which was parked in the lot and drove away colliding with a Volkwagon Jetta.  The suspect then allegedly drove in the direction of security officers who were in the area.   A second vehicle, a Pontiac Sunfire, was also struck in the area of Perth Avenue and Main Street where the stolen vehicle was abandoned.
 
Guthrie Eric FONTAINE, 32 years of Selkirk Manitoba is facing the following charges for his alleged involvement into these incidents: 
 
- Robbery
- Drive impaired and refuse breathalyzer
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Two counts of assault with a weapon
- Breach of probation and
- Highway traffic act fail to remain
 
FONTAINE has been detained in custody.
