Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Thursday, March 31st, 2011  

 
STABBING                                              C11-62374
On Thursday, March 31st, 2011 at approximately 12:45 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members, along with Emergency Service Responders attended to the area of the 700 block of Maryland Street for a report of two individuals that had been stabbed. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 30 year old female and a 39 year old male suffering from stab wounds to their upper bodies.  Both individuals were transported to the hospital in stable condition. 
 
Limited information has been provided to officers. This investigation is continuing by members of the Division 11 Crime Unit.
 
 
COMMERICAL ROBBERY                       C11-62216
On Wednesday, March 30th, 2011 at approximately 8:20 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a restaurant in the 200 block of Henderson Highway for commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Officers have learned that a lone male suspect entered the restaurant while armed with a gun and demanded money from the 24 year old male clerk.  After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash the suspect fled the store. 
 
The clerk did not sustain any injuries.  The suspect is described as:
 
Caucasian male, approximately 20 years, 5'8" tall and wearing a dark shirt.     
 
Anyone with information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators from the Major Crimes Unit at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

INCREASE IN RESIDENTIAL MAILBOX THEFTS
The Winnipeg Police Service has recently seen a spike in break-ins to apartment and condominium mailboxes throughout the city and therefore is recommending that residents check their mailboxes everyday. 
 
If you know that you will be away for an extended period of time, please make arrangements to have your mail forwarded, picked up or stopped during that time.  Sensitive and valuable personal information is often sent via mail and can be used to facilitate other fraud related crimes.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- ARREST   C11-52151
As previously released on March 16th, 2011 at approximately 9:10 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the rear of Portage Avenue and Vaughn Street regarding a stabbing incident.
 
It has been determined that a 19 year old male and 22 year old male victim were confronted by an armed suspect. It was at this time both victims were stabbed to the upper body.
 
Abdul Rahim Mah JEMEI 22 years was conveyed to hospital in critical condition but had succumbed to injuries. The 19 year old victim was treated and released from hospital.
 
On March 17th, 2011, a 16 year old male had been arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder. He remains in custody at the Manitoba Youth Centre. 
 
On Tuesday, March 29th, 2011, at approximately 10:00 p.m. a search warrant was executed at a residence within the 500 block of Langside Street and a 24 year male was taken into custody without incident. 
 
Ramsey SWAIN, 24 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident:
 
-          Second Degree Murder
-          Assault with a Weapon and
-          Warrant for Arrest- Witness
 
SWAIN has been detained in custody.
 
 
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT- UPDATE  C11-60932
As previously released, on Tuesday, March 29th, 2011 at approximately 11:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 16 Officers observed a vehicle driving in an erratic manner in the area of the 3200 block of Pembina Highway.  Subsequent police checks revealed that vehicle's insurance had lapsed and a traffic stop was initiated near the intersection of Pembina Highway and Ducharme Avenue. 
 
During the traffic stop the 27 year old male driver appeared to be under the influence of an unknown drug was subsequently arrested. 
 
A search of the vehicle located a number of chemicals consistent with the production of Methamphetamine and as a result, the Winnipeg Police Clandestine Lab Unit and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Hazardous Materials Unit were called to the scene.
 
Brendan Kyle SHEPERT, 27 years has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement:
 
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking X2
  • Possessing controlled drug or substance- METHAMPHETAMINE
  • Production of controlled substance
  • Transport dangerous goods in a means of containment that is not secured
  • Highway Traffic Act charges and
  • An outstanding warrant for failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking
SHEPERT has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

SPRING BREAK ROAD SAFETY
As the warmer weather approaches, the Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind motorists the importance of the safety of our children as they go about their activities during Spring Break.
 
Children can be unpredictable around roadways and therefore motorists are requested to reduce their speeds and pay extra attention to areas in which children may be present. 
 
Parents and guardians, please talk to your child about traffic safety and teach them when and where it is safest to cross the street, while stressing the importance of using crosswalks whenever possible.  Children should visually scan potential dangerous areas such as parking lots and driveways for vehicles.
 
Parents, guardians and other motorists should consider the volume and speed of the traffic in your area.  Be mindful of children in the area and pay particular attention near schools, shopping malls and playgrounds as children could dart from between vehicles at any time.
 
Please remember, Just Slow Down and enjoy your Spring Break.

A 27 year old male of no fixed address has been arrested and will facing the following charges:

  • Various Highway Traffic Act charges
 
The investigation is continuing by the Organized Crime Unit.
 
 
SUSPICIOUS MALE INCIDENTS             C11-39296
Between February 26th, 2011 and March 24th, 2011 the Winnipeg Police Service Division 13 Officers have received reports of three separate incidents involving a suspicious male. These incidents have occurred during the early morning hours, between 2:45 a.m. and 7:45 a.m.  
 
In all of the incidents, the suspect male approaches the female victims as they are entering or exiting their personal vehicles within their garages. When the victims shouted for help the suspect male fled the area immediately.   
 
There were no reported injuries during these incidents and it has still not been determined what the suspect's motive was.   
 
The suspect is described as being;

Caucasian or Aboriginal Male, approximately 20- 30 years, and approximately 5'8"- 6'0" tall, with a thin build.
 
The suspect was wearing a dark-coloured hoody with the hood up and his face covered, as well as dark coloured pants or sweats.   
 
Anyone who may have information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Division 13 Crime Unit at 986-2848, or CrimeStoppers at 786-8477.
 
 
AGGRAVATED ASSAULT ARREST- UPDATE              C11-58093
As previously released, on March 24th, 2011 at approximately 10:20 p.m., Uniform Members were dispatched to a care facility located in the 400 block of Edmonton Street regarding a report of an assault that had recently occurred.
 
Attending members learned that two male residents, 70 years and 87 years had been occupying an activity room within the facility, when they became involved in a confrontation. It is alleged that the 70 year old male physically assaulted the 87 year old male to the upper body causing him to fall backwards, subsequently striking his head on the floor.
 
Emergency services responded and the 87 year old male was conveyed to hospital in critical condition.  
 
On March 25th, 2011, Joseph Alfred MCLEOD, 70 years had been charged with Aggravated Assault.   
 
On Monday, March 28th, 2011, the 87 year old male victim had succumbed to his injuries. 
 
This investigation is still ongoing, along with consultation from the Crown Attorney's office.

MISSING PERSONS - SEIANNA LEASK & MAUREEN LOWE – C11-59470
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating 10 year old female, Seianna LEASK and her 13 year old sister, Maureen LOWE.
 
Both LEASK and LOWE were last seen on the morning of March 27, 2011 and are believed to be together.
 
 
 
LEASK is described as Aboriginal in appearance, 5'3", weighing 110lbs. She has long straight black hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing low-rise sweatpants.
 
 
 
LOWE is described as Aboriginal, 5'3", 140lbs, black medium-length hair, brown eyes.   LOWE was last seen wearing a light blue t-shirt and low rise jeans.
 
Anyone with information regarding LEASK or LOWE's whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service 986-6222 or the Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250.

SERIOUS SEXUAL ASSAULT C11-59461
On March 26, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service became involved in an investigation regarding a serious sexual assault which occurred on March 25th at approximately 10:30 p.m., in the area of McGregor Street and Aberdeen Avenue.  
 
Officers met with a 19 year old female victim who advised that she was walking westbound on Aberdeen Avenue when she was grabbed from behind by an unknown male suspect. The victim then observed two additional male suspects who took hold of her and carried her northbound for approximately 3 blocks.
 
The suspects continued to carry the victim to a porch somewhere in the area. It was at this time a serious sexual assault occurred. Prior to the suspects fleeing, the victim was robbed of her jacket and purse.
 
As a result of the incident, the victim sustained multiple upper and lower body injuries.
 
The suspects are described as:
 
Suspect #1: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, olive skin, 20-25 years, 6'1"- 6'2", 180 lbs., skinny build, muscular, good teeth, clear complexion, no facial hair, black jeans , black sweater and red hat.
Suspect #2: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 26-27 years, 6'4", 250 lbs, large build, bushy eyebrows, chubby cheeks, crooked teeth, small mouth, wearing all black clothing with a red sweater.
Suspect #3: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, fair complexion, approximately 18 years old, 5'6", 150-160 lbs, medium build, chubby build, red bandana covering the lower half of his face, red shirt, black sweater.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Sex Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6245 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

GROW OPERATION ARREST C11-57801
As a result of an ongoing investigation, on March 24, 2011 at approximately 5:30 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Drug Unit with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence on Mount Auburn Bay.
 
As a result, officers located a grow operation within the residence consisting of the following:
 
·        570 marihuana plants – estimated street value of $638,400.000
·        Grow operation equipment – valued at $12,000.00
·        100 grams of packaged cannabis marihuana – valued at $1000.00
 
A lone occupant was located within the residence and subsequently arrested. A 48 year old male is facing the following charges: Production of Cannabis Marihuana, Possess For The Purpose Of Trafficking Cannabis Marihuana and Theft of Telecommunications.
 
The accused was released on a Promise to Appear.
 
 
AGGRAVATED ASSAULT ARREST C11-58093
On March 24, 2011 at approximately 10:20 p.m., uniform members were dispatched to a care facility located in the 400 block of Edmonton Street regarding a report of an assault that had recently occurred.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

MISSING PERSON – OLIVIA ROSS – C11-58059
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating 13 year old female, Olivia ROSS.
 
ROSS was last seen on March 24th, 2011 just after 9:00 p.m. in the North End area of Winnipeg.
 
ROSS is described as: Aboriginal, 5'5' in height, 130lbs, short straight black hair, brown eyes, wearing: a white sweater overtop of a red hoody, red pyjama pants, white sneakers, red & white knitted toque with strings hanging down either side, and carrying a green Superstore bag.
 
 
 
ROSS is known to frequent the downtown area. 
 
The Winnipeg Police Service considers ROSS to be a child in need of protection as she is at high risk of being victimized and investigators are concerned for her well-being.
 
Anyone with information regarding ROSS' whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service 986-6222 or the Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250.
