CRIME PREVENTION TIP   Safety Tips on Debit Cards & Automated Teller Machines   Debit Cards are a fact of life in Canada today.  They are an excellent alternative to carrying cash or credit cards, however it is important that people take action to protect themselves:   ·        When selecting your Personal Identification Number, stay away from obvious codes, such as your birth date, Social Insurance Number or Address.   ·        Protect your PIN, never give it to anyone or write it down where a criminal could discover it.   ·        When possible use an ATM that is in a busy area where there are lots of people around.  And when it is dark try to use an ATM that is in well lighted area.   ·        Never count your cash out in the open where someone can notice it.  DON"T advertise how much $$ you took out as you are unnecessarily putting yourself at risk.   ·        Be aware of your surroundings and make sure there is no one lurking around the ATM that you are going to use.            For further Crime Prevention information visit our website at http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/tblofcontents/crimeprevention.stm
