RESIDENTIAL BREAK AND ENTER ARREST
C12-183302
On October 2, 2012 at approximately 3:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to the area of the first 100 block of Pinecrest Bay regarding a residential break and enter incident.
 
An investigation revealed that a male suspect attended to a house at this location and entered the unlocked front door while the resident was in the backyard unaware of the incident.
 
The male suspect then exited the residence and was located in the immediate area by attending members.  He was arrested and taken into custody.
 
The suspect is identified as: Gregory Francis COURCHENE, 41 years of Winnipeg.
 
An on-going investigation revealed that COURCHENE was also responsible for the following residential break-ins.
 
August 30, 2012 – 300 block of Fearn Avenue – Stole cash and credit cards
September 11, 2012 – First 100 block of St. Vital Road – Stole cash and credit cards
September 18, 2012 – 200 block of Munroe Avenue – Stole cash and credit cards
September 28, 2012 – 200 block of Linden Avenue – Stole credit cards
 
The stolen credit cards obtained from the break-ins were used to purchase items at several locations throughout the city.
 
The total value of stolen cash, property and fraudulent credit card use from the five residential break-ins is approximately $3000.00 dollars.
 
COURCHENE has been charged with: Break Enter a Dwelling house X 5, Possession Use of Credit Card X 4, Possess Property Obtained by Crime and Fail to Comply with Condition of Recognizance.
 
He has been detained in custody.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind members of the public to insure that their homes are secure at all times. In all the above-noted incidents, the residents were home either working or relaxing in their back yards when the break-ins occurred. 
 
 
Members of the public are also encouraged to contact police immediately if or when suspicious activity of this nature is observed in their community.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERIES ARREST C12-179022
As a result of an ongoing investigation, on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at approximately 2:10 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit attended to the area of Rorie Street and Market Avenue where they located and arrested Jason Benjamin WOODWARD, 21 years old of Winnipeg for several commercial robberies.

The investigation revealed that on August 20, 2012 at approximately 1:50 a.m., WOODWARD, armed with a weapon attended to a convenience store in the 1800 block of Main Street where he confronted a 31 year old female employee and stole cigarettes and lottery tickets before fleeing from the location.  The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.

On September 1, 2012 at 3:55 a.m., WOODWARD wearing a disguise and armed with a weapon attended to another convenience store located in the 3300 block of Portage Avenue and confronted a 33 year old male employee.  WOODWARD demanded and stole cigarettes and lottery tickets before fleeing from the store. The victim did not sustain injuries as a result of the incident.

On September 6, 2012 at 12:52 a.m., WOODWARD and a female suspect; both wearing disguises and armed with weapons, attended to a convenience store in the 800 block of Cavalier Drive where they confronted a 27 year old male employee.  WOODWARD and the female suspect demanded and stole a quantity of cigarettes and lottery tickets before fleeing from the area. The victim was not injured during the incident.

On September 6, 2012 at 2:35 a.m., WOODWARD, along with the same female suspect; both wearing disguises and armed with weapons, attended to a convenience store located in the area of the 3300 block of Portage Avenue where they confronted a 27 year old female employee.  They demanded and received an undisclosed amount of cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets before fleeing from the store. The victim did not sustain injury as a result of the incident.

On September 23, 2012 at 4:35 a.m., WOODWARD armed with a weapon attended to a convenience store in the area of the 1800 block of Main Street and confronted a lone 57 year old male employee. WOODWARD demanded and stole an undisclosed amount of lottery tickets before fleeing from the location. The victim was not injured as a result of the incident. 

As result of these incidents, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit initiated an investigation and were able to identify the accused WOODWARD as the suspect involved in these robberies.

WOODWARD has been charged with:
Robbery with Weapon X 5, Disguise with Intent X 3 and Fail to Comply with Condition of Recognizance X 23.

He has been detained in custody.
 

HOMICIDE UPDATE ARREST      C12 -196569
As previously released - on September 29, 2012, at approximately 12:20 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service and other emergency personnel responded to the 600 block of Maryland Street regarding shots being fired.
 
Moments later, a second call to police indicated that a male had been located and was suffering from a gunshot wound. Attending members located the injured male and while searching the area, a second male was found to be suffering from injuries consistent with being shot.
 
Jordan Dennis HOULE, 24 years old of Winnipeg was conveyed from the scene in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries. A 19 year old male was conveyed from the scene in serious condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.
 
As a result of an on-going investigation by Members of the Homicide Unit, Michael Frank OKEMOW, 24 years old of Winnipeg was located in the 500 block of Langside Street on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at approximately 2:30 p.m. He was arrested and taken into custody. 
 
Michael Frank OKEMOW has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Attempted Murder.

He was detained in custody.
 
The investigation is continuing by the Homicide Unit.
 
**Attention members of the media** Investigators are requesting the media not release any photos of the accused. If the accused photo is published in the media this may compromise on-going witness interviews and jeopardize the investigation.
