Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

 Friday, May 4, 2012 


ARSON ARRESTS – C12-74225
As previously released, on April, 24, 2012, at approximately 7:40 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service and other emergency personnel responded to the north river bank near the walking path at the Forks for a working fire.
 
Several portable docks located at this location were engulfed in flames, which spread to a number of trees in the surrounding area. Damage is estimated at approximately $30,000.00. There were no injuries.
 
The investigation continued by members of the Arson Strike Force.
 
On May 3, 2012, two 17 year old males were arrested. They are facing the following charges:
 
17 year old male - Arson – Damage to Property
Possession Incendiary Material
Failure to Comply with Sentence
Fail to Comply with Condition Undertaking
 
17 year old male - Arson – Damage to property
 
One of the males has been detained and the other was released on a Promise to Appear.
 
 
TRAFFIC PURSUIT INVOLVING AIR1 – ARRESTS C12-81168
On May 4, 2012, at approximately 5:00 a.m., Uniform Patrol members observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the area of Roblin Boulevard near Assiniboine Park. As a result, officers attempted a traffic stop however, the vehicle fled from police continuing at a high rate of speed.
 
Members of the WPS Flight Operations Unit, AIR1 were requested and immediately responded to the area.
 
The suspect vehicle continued to flee from police, having no regard for public safety. With Air1 assuming control of the pursuit, ground units attempted to deploy two tire deflation devices, however the suspect vehicle continued to evade officers.
 
Due to the coordinated efforts of Air1 and Uniform Patrol members, the suspect vehicle was successfully tracked to the area of Lee Boulevard and Shore Street. Despite the vehicle being abandoned at this location, Air1 was able to direct ground units to the suspects who were attempting to further evade police on foot along a nearby railway track.
 
Two males, 20 and 23 years of age were arrested.
 
The 23 year old male driver is facing the following offences:
 
  • Dangerous Operation – Motor Vehicle
  • Flight from Police Officer
The 20 year old male passenger is not facing any charges.
