WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE 8TH ANNUAL HALF MARATHON
AND TWO-PERSON RELAY
IN SUPPORT OF COPS FOR CANCER

On May 6th, 2012 the Winnipeg Police Service will proudly host its eighth annual half marathon in support of the Cops for Cancer (Winnipeg Iron Cops) Program. This event is hosted in cooperation with the Winnipeg Police Service where approximately 2,600 runners will be racing in this event.

Cancer has affected so many people today and has touched each and every one of us in many different ways. Each member of the race committee has been affected by way of a family member diagnosed with cancer, a friend, a co-worker or themselves. Iron Cops is part of the Cops for Cancer program that has fundraised for the Canadian Cancer Society and raised over $14,000,000.00 nationally since it's inception in 1994. Since 2000, the Winnipeg Iron Cops chapter alone has raised approximately $750,000.00 of that amount; and approximately $580,000.00 since the inception of the WPS Half Marathon.

The event is scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m. just east of the footbridge with a fly pass of a Canadian Forces C130 aircraft. The Winnipeg Police Service's helicopter, AIR1 will be on site at the Assiniboine Park for public viewing – weather permitting. Members of the public are invited to cheer runners along the route and enjoy a pancake breakfast at the finisher area near the duck pond by donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

1st leg: Runners will head east from the start line then south through the park on Locomotive Drive and Formal Garden Way to make their way out of the Park. The runners will then proceed north on Park Blvd N then east on Wellington Cr (in the west bound lanes) to Oxford St (turn-around point) where they will return west on Wellington Cr and then north over the train footbridge at Empress St; continue west on the north side of the river on Wolseley Ave W, under Route 90 overpass to Riverbend Cr, Assiniboine Ave; north on Douglas Park Rd then west on Portage Ave in the east bound traffic curb lane. Relay exchange is set up in the vicinity of Portage Ave and Overdale St.
