CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK A GOOD TIME TO EVALUATE DRIVING HABITS: MANITOBA ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE

WINNIPEG ─ The Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) is putting out a call to action to motorists to focus on their driving behaviour, during Canada Road Safety Week.

Canada Road Safety Week, which runs from May 14-21, is a national enforcement-driven initiative sponsored by the Traffic Committee of Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. Today's announcement was made in Winnipeg at the annual meeting of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, which consists of provincial and territorial motor vehicle administrators, various vehicle safety stakeholders and industry-related organizations.

During Canada Road Safety Week, police agencies across Canada will focus heavily on road safety and enforcement. The focus will be on behaviours that reduce risks for drivers, passengers and pedestrians: sober and alert driving, the proper use of seat belts and child safety restraints, and refraining from all aspects of aggressive driving.

"We all carry a huge responsibility when we get behind the wheel, and that responsibility starts with choices. Choosing to be sober and choosing to follow the rules of the road," Manitoba Attorney General Andrew Swan said today. "So not only this week, but every week, I remind motorists to make the choices that keep them and their families safe when they hit the road."

Changing driver behaviour

"Canadian road users can make a difference by making safe driving decisions on our roadways," said MACP President Keith McCaskill, who is chief of the Winnipeg Police Service.

"Many crashes, deaths and injuries could be totally avoided had the driver adjusted their behaviour. We're challenging all drivers to evaluate their behaviours and make safe adjustments."

Canadians can do their part by:

·        Driving sober
·        Wearing a seatbelt
·        Observing speed limits
·        Not using cell phone or texting devices while driving
·        Properly securing children in the appropriate child car seats.

"Road Safety Week not only raises public awareness but also demonstrates the shared commitment of the RCMP and our partners in law enforcement and road safety to the well-being of the motoring public," said Assistant Commissioner Bill Robinson, Commanding Officer of RCMP "D" Division. "We urge motorists to reflect on their driving habits and do their part to make Manitoba roads safer."

Motorists should also always pay attention to vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists). In Canada, one person dies every four hours on our roads and approximately 500 people are injured per day. Worldwide, approximately 1.3 million people are killed in road crashes each year and about 20 to 50 million are injured.

About Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) was founded in Toronto on September 6, 1905. It was first known as the "Chief Constables Association of Canada" and adopted its current name in the early 1950s. It was incorporated by Letters Patent under Part II of the Canada Corporations Act in 1968 as a non-profit organization.

The Association is dedicated to the support and promotion of efficient law enforcement and to the protection and security of the people of Canada. Much of the work in pursuit of these goals is done through the activities and special projects of a number of committees and through active liaison with various levels of government and departmental ministries having legislative and executive responsibility in law and policing.
