COMMERCIAL BREAK AND ENTER – ARRESTS C12-93416
On May 20, 2012, at approximately 8:50 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a break and enter in progress at a restaurant located in the 400 block of Portage Avenue.
 
Attending members were advised that two suspects had broken into the business, which was initially observed by security officers. After the suspects caused damage within the business and attempted to remove liquor, members of the Winnipeg Police Service were summoned.
 
One of the suspects fled the area prior to police arrival. The other suspect remained on scene at which time he armed himself with a fire extinguisher. The suspect then discharged the contents of the extinguisher at security officers, while motioning to use the canister in a threatening manner.  
 
Upon police arrival, the suspect then armed himself with a corrosive cleaning fluid which was splashed towards security officers. A police member sustained an injury as a result of the incident. The suspect was taken into custody and placed under arrest.
 
At approximately 10:30 a.m., officers located the second suspect in the area of Ellice Avenue and Smith Street. He was arrested at that time.
 
A 15 year old male and 16 year old male are facing numerous charges, some of which include:
 
  • Break and Enter
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
The investigation is continuing.
 
 
TRAFFIC PURSUIT/IMPAIRED DRIVING ARREST –
C12-93804
On May, 20, 2012, at approximately 9:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crime Unit, while patrolling the West End area, observed a Pontiac Montana van being operated in an erratic manner.
 
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Portage Avenue and Arlington Street however, the driver fled from police at a high rate of speed. A brief pursuit was initiated and then aborted, due to the unsafe manner of driving by the suspect.
 
At approximately 9:10 p.m., the suspect was again observed travelling near Memorial Boulevard and York Avenue by members of the Canine Unit. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle safely on Portage Avenue at Kennedy Street, when the suspect accelerated nearly colliding with the police vehicle. Again, the suspect fled the area at a high rate of speed having no regard for public safety.
 
A short time later, District 3 Uniform Patrol members observed the suspect vehicle near Salter Street and Redwood Avenue. The suspect continued to flee from police, travelling southbound on Main Street.
 
Officers subsequently deployed a tire deflation device in the area of Main Street and Selkirk Avenue which immobilized the suspect vehicle. It was at this time a lone male suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
 
David Singh GREWAL, 28 years has been charged with the following offences:
 
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Flight from Police Officer
  • Impaired Driving
  • Failure to Provide a Breath Sample
  • Fail to Comply with Condition Recognizance
  • Including numerous Highway Traffic Act offences
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY C12-93288
On May 20, 2012, officers responded to the report of a robbery incident that occurred in the area of the 100 block of Marion Street at approximately 1:30 a.m.
 
Members met with a 19 year old male victim who advised that after making a purchase at a beer vendor, he was confronted from behind by an unknown male. The suspect demanded his wallet while pushing the victim to the ground. The victim fled to his vehicle at which time he discovered that he had sustained an upper body injury as a result of the incident.
 
The victim was robbed of his wallet and contents.
 
The victim is in stable condition and the investigation is continuing.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C12-93746
On May 20, 2012, at approximately 7:40 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a gas bar located in the 700 block of Keewatin Street regarding a robbery incident.
 
The investigation has revealed that two suspects entered the business, one of which was armed with a large knife. A 17 year old male employee was confronted but not injured. After demanding that the till be opened, both suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes.
 
They are described as:
 
Suspect #1 – Caucasian male, 18-20 years, 6'1" tall with a medium build.
 
Suspect #2 – Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 18-20 years, 6'1" tall with a medium build.
 
No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 204-986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON INVESTIGATION C12-93813
On May 20, 2012, at approximately 9:10 p.m., several police units responded to the area of Portage Avenue and Garry Street regarding a stabbing incident.
 
Officers met with a 19 year old male who had sustained an upper body injury consistent with being stabbed. He is in stable condition.
 
The investigation has revealed that the victim had become involved in a verbal altercation with three unknown males while travelling on a city transit bus. All involved males eventually exited the bus in the area of Portage Avenue and Garry Street when a physical confrontation occurred. The victim was injured at this time and the suspects fled the area.
 
The suspects are described as:
 
Suspect #1 – Caucasian male, 5'8"-5'9" tall, 150 lbs., clean shaven. (Armed with a knife)
 
Suspect #2 – Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 5'8" tall, 140 lbs., short black hair, clean shaven.
 
Suspect #3 – Unknown.
 
No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is continuing by members of the Division 11 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 204-986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
FIRE C12-93388
On May 20, 2012, at approximately 7:35 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a fire incident at an apartment located in area of the 500 block of Osborne Street.
 
The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $10,000.00.
 
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. Members of the Arson Strike Force continue to investigate.
 
 
FIRE C12-94060
On May 21, 2012, at approximately 5:05 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a working garage fire located in the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue.
 
The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported. Damage is estimated between $10,000.00 and $15,000.00.
 
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and the investigation is continuing.
