MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- SUSPICIOUS PACKAGE UPDATE        C11-262262
As previously released, on December 19th, 2011 just before 7:00 a.m. emergency services responders were dispatched to the area of Portage Avenue and Strathcona Street for reports of a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles.

Both male drivers of the vehicles, aged 47 and 39 years, were transported to the hospital in stable condition.

During the investigation officers located a suspicious package within a Mitsubishi car that had been involved in the collision.  Winnipeg Police Service Bomb Unit members attended to the scene and the package, which resembled a pipe bomb, was successfully detonated without incident.

At this stage in the investigation, officers have learned that the Mitsubishi car was travelling at a high rate of speed westbound on Portage Avenue approaching Strathona Street when it collided with a GMC Jimmy that was attempting to make a turn westbound onto Portage Avenue from Strathcona Street.

Division 11 Uniform members are continuing with this investigation.  Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision.  A 39 year old male driver of the Mitsubishi has been issued a provincial offence notice for drive imprudently.

All roadways in the area have since been re-opened to traffic. The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank motorists for their patience.
