Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Friday, December 9th, 2011

MALE SHOT- HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION   C11-254016
As previously released, on December 7th, 2011 at approximately 3:50 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of the 700 block of Beverley Street for the sound of shots being fired. 
 
Upon arrival officers located an injured adult male in the area suffering from gun shot wounds.  Paramedics attended and transported the male to the hospital in critical condition. 
 
Attending members were made aware of a taxi cab leaving the area at the time of the shooting.  Officers located the cab in the area of Pembina Highway and Chancellor Drive where a number of males were taken into custody and later released.
 
On December 8th, 2011 during the late evening hours, investigators were notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Darren Paul GEORGE, 22 years of Winnipeg.  
 
Investigators have and are continuing to interview a number people in connection with this incident. 
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Homicide Unit.  Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
PUBLIC ADVISORY- INCREASE IN THEFTS FROM VEHICLES
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to advise members of the public that there have been an increase in thefts from vehicles throughout the city. 
 
In many instances, electronic items such as lap tops or Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have been left in plain view within the vehicle.  The vehicles are then entered via an unsecure door or by smashing a window.   
 
Please consider the following: 
 
 - Park in well-lit areas and lock your vehicle at all times. 
 - Do not leave GPS devices attached to windshields or dashboards. 
 - Do not leave lap tops or other valuables inside your vehicle. 
- When shopping, do not leave packages inside your car instead, place them in the trunk.
 
If suspicious activity is observed in parking lots or within your community contact police immediately.  Additional safety tips can be found on the Winnipeg Police Service website at www.winnipeg.ca/police
