Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Sunday, December 11th, 2011

11:00 a.m.
 
 
HOUSE FIRE                            C11-256423
On December 11th, 2011 at just after 4:00 p.m. emergency services responders attended to a residence within the 300 block of Toronto Street for a working fire.  
 
The Winnipeg Fire Department worked quickly and extinguished the fire.  Damage to the residence is estimated at $250,000.
 
Five children between the ages of 2 years and 14 years all escaped the residence without injury. 
 
This investigation is still ongoing. At this time the fire is believed to be accidental. 
 
 
RESIDENTIAL BREAK AND ENTER  C11-256720
On December 11th, 2011 just before 1:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a residence within the 300 block of Alfred Avenue for a shots call. 
 
Upon arrival officers met with the residents of the home and learned that two male suspects attended to the home and knocked on the door.  When the door was opened the suspects pushed their way into residence and a struggle ensued with an 18 year old male victim.  Hearing the commotion a 43 year old male came from another area of the home to assist.  During the struggle one of the suspects produced a shotgun and the gun was discharged.  The victims managed to disarm the suspect of the gun and both males fled the area.
 
Police were notified and an extensive area search was conducted for the suspect with negative results.
 
The following is a description of the suspects:
 
Suspect #1: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 16 to 18 years of age, approximately 5'6" to 5'8" tall with a thin build. He was wearing dark clothing and a puffy jacket.
 
Suspect #2: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 16 to 17 years of age, also 5'8" tall with an average build. He was wearing a dark coloured jacket with a hood.
There were no injuries reported during this incident and nothing was stolen. 
 
This investigation is continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit.  Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
THEFT OF TAXI CAB- ARREST        C11-256498
On December 10th, 2011 at approximately 6:00 p.m. a 20 year old intoxicated female entered a cab in the area of Maryland Street and Wellington Avenue, when an argument ensued between this female and the taxi driver. In attempts to remove the female from the cab the driver got out of the taxi where he attended to the passenger door. Instead of exiting the vehicle the female locked the doors, moved into the driver's seat and proceeded to drive away in the taxi cab. 
 
Winnipeg Police Service members were notified and attended to the area where at approximately 6:15 p.m., officers located the taxi and the suspect female in the rear lane within the 600 block of Balmoral Street.  The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
 
As a result of the efforts of the Division11 general patrol members, Shayla Elyshia June WOODFORD, 20 years of Winnipeg is facing the following charges for her alleged involvement in this incident:
 
-          Theft over
-         Impaired driving of a motor vehicle
-         Driver over 80 and
-         Breach of Probation
 
WOODFORD has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY             C11-256852
On December 11th, 2011 at approximately 6:40 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 16 members responded to a convenience store within the 2000 block of Pembina Highway for a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that two male suspects, armed with metal poles, entered the store and demanded cash and cigarettes from the 28 year old male clerk. 
 
After obtaining cash and cigarettes, the suspects fled the store towards Chancellor Drive.
 
The suspects are both described as being:  Caucasian males, approximately 18 to 20 years of age, 5'11" tall with thin builds and wearing black jackets.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the suspects is asked to contact police at 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
BREAK AND ENTER INVESTIGATION- ARREST         C11-256667
On December 10th, 2011 shortly before 11:30 p.m. a number of Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a residence within the 200 block of Queen Street for reports of a break and enter and a stabbing that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 16 year old male who had sustained a laceration to his upper body. Paramedics attended and transported the youth to the hospital in stable condition. 
 
A 40 year old female resident was also located. Officers learned that that an adult female and two female youths, whom are known to the residents, attended inside the home and an argument ensued. This argument escalated into a physical altercation between all parties and police were called. 
 
The suspects fled the area.  Officers were then notified the suspect females had attempted to board a bus on Portage Avenue, but were refused entry. 
 
Responding Division 12 members, with the assistance of Air1, located the suspects in the area of Portage Avenue and Riverbend Cresent. The females were taken into custody without incident. 
 
As a result of the continued investigation by members of the Major Crimes Unit, a 37 female will be facing two counts of Mischief Under $5000. She has been released to appear in court at later date. 
 
This investigation is continuing.
