Winnipeg Police Service News Release

COMMERICAL ROBBERIES- ARREST       C11-254647
On December 8th, 2011 shortly before 3:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a convenience store within the 600 block of Ellice Avenue for a commercial robbery that had just occurred by a lone male suspect. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that a suspect male, while armed with a knife, had approached the 32 year old male clerk and demanded cash.  A small amount of cash was taken prior to the suspect fleeing the store. 
 
Then at approximately 3:20 a.m., while a number of police units were in the area searching for the suspect, a second commercial robbery was broadcast at a restaurant within the 200 block of Maryland Street. 
 
Dispatch information indicated that a lone male, armed with a knife and having his identity concealed, attended inside the restaurant and demanded cash from the 42 year old female clerk.  The cash drawer was removed and the suspect fled the area. 
 
Responding Division 11 units immediately attended to the area and observed the suspect within a yard in the 600 block of Sara Avenue.  At approximately 3:30 a.m., the suspect male was taken into custody near the intersection of Sara Avenue and Sherbrook Street after a brief foot chase. 
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing with this investigation.  A 26 year old male is currently in custody and will be facing two counts of robbery with a weapon and disguise with intent. 
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                C11-254414
On December 7th, 2011 at approximately 6:50 a.m. emergency services personal responded to a working fire at a business within the 2200 block of Logan Avenue. 
 
As a result of the fire four vehicles sustained an estimated $200,000 in damages. 
 
At this time the fire does not appear to be suspicious.  This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force.
