Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Saturday, December 17th, 2011

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- ARREST       C11-250994
As previously released, on December 2nd, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police and emergency services responded to a medic call in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue.
 
A 19 year old female was located within a residence and was conveyed to the hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.  The victim, who sustained severe upper body injuries, has been identifies as; Dominique McCANN (NIPPI)
 
The investigation led by members of the Homicide Unit revealed that on December 1st 2011, at approximately 9:00 p.m. the victim and a 25 year old male known to her were walking together when a physical altercation occurred.  During the altercation the victim was physically assaulted about the upper body, which resulted in extensive internal injures.  
 
The victim managed to make her way to a residence within the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue, where she was later found and police were notified.  
 
On December 16th, 2011 at approximately 8:30 a.m., as a result of the continued investigation, a suspect male was taken into custody without incident.
 
Donald Jacob GIRARD, 25 years of Winnipeg is facing one count of 2nd degree murder for his alleged involvement in this incident.  GIRARD has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.   
 
 
COMMERICAL ROBBERIES- ARREST      C11-260809
On December 17th, 2011 at approximately 4:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a convenience store within the 700 block of Corydon Avenue for a report of a suspicious male in the parking lot armed with a knife. 
 
Responding Division 16 members located a suspect male in the area of Grosvenor Avenue and Wellington Cresent where he was taken into custody without incident. 
 
The investigation revealed that the lone male suspect, while armed with a knife, had attended inside the convenience store.  The suspect approached the clerk with assorted merchandise that he had selected and demanded the clerk activate the gift cards. The suspect fled the store with the merchandise and police were notified.
 
As a result of the continued investigation by members of the Major Crimes Unit the same male suspect is also believed to be responsible for a similar robbery that occurred on December 16th, 2011 at approximately 4:00 a.m. at the same convenience store.
 
In both instances the store clerks were threatened, but were not injured.  
 
An 18 year old male from Winnipeg will be facing the following charges:
 
- Robbery with weapon x 2
- Wear disguise with intent x 2
- Utter threats to kill x 2
 
FIRE                                                              C11-260937
On December 17th, 2011 just before 5:20 a.m. a number of police units and emergency services responders were dispatched to attend a residence within the 400 block of Maryland Street for a report of a working fire.
 
All occupants were able to escape the residence without any injury.     
 
This investigation is continuing. A cause of the fire has yet to be determined.  
 
FIRE                                                                C11-260947
On December 17th, 2011 at approximately 5:50 a.m. emergency services responders attended to a working fire at a multi-unit apartment complex within the 200 block of Beverley Street. 
 
As a result of the fire, the apartment complex was evacuated and several adults and children were conveyed to the hospital in stable condition. 
 
The building sustained extensive damage. 
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Arson Strike Force.   
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON                   C11-260822
On December 17th, 2011 at approximately 1:25 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the area of Burrows Avenue and Andrews Street for a report of an injured male lying on the ground.
 
Upon arrival officers located a 16 year old male youth suffering from stab wounds to his upper and lower body.  Paramedics transported the male to the hospital in critical condition, where he has since been treated and released. 
 
This investigation is in the early stages and is ongoing by members of the Division 13 Crime Unit.
