Winnipeg Police Service News Release

ABBY AND DOMINIC MARYK INVESTIGATION
On December 19th, 2011 a video created by the Winnipeg Police Service's Video Production Unit, in conjunction with the Missing Persons Unit, was released regarding the ongoing investigation into the parental abduction of the MARYK children.
 
Abby and Dominic MARYK were last seen on August 16th, 2008.
 
Investigators are requesting members of the public and the media's assistance in sharing this video with others throughout the country.

STRONG ARM ROBBERY              C11-262756
On December 19th, 2011 at approximately 11:00 p.m. a 22 year old victim was walking in the area of a community club within the 900 block of Winakwa Street when he was approached by a male and female.  The male suspect immediately demanded the victim's wallet which was relinquished. 
 
Both suspects fled the area and police were contacted.  The victim did not sustain any injures. 
 
The suspects are described as: 
 
Suspect #1: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 20 years of age, 6'0" tall with a large build and dark hair.   He was wearing a hoodie at the time of the offence.
 
Suspect #2: Caucasian female, approximately 18 to 20 years of age, 5'0" tall with a slim build and dark hair.
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the East District Crime Unit. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 986-2857 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY                    C11-262760
On December 19th, 2011 at approximately 11:05 p.m. a 25 year old victim was walking in the area of Winakwa Road and Speers Road when he was approached by a male who demanded he turn over his personal property.  The victim turned over a small amount of money and the suspect fled the area. 
 
A number of police units attended to the area in search of the suspect, which was unsuccessful.
 
The suspect is described as, Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 20 to 25 years, 6'1" tall and approximately 210 pounds with dark hair.  He was wearing a hoodie and jeans.
 
East District Crime Unit members are continuing with this investigation. 
 
 
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION                  C11-250994
As previously released, on December 2nd, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police and emergency services responded to a medic call in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue.
 
A 19 year old female was located within a residence and was conveyed to the hospital in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.  The victim, who sustained severe upper body injuries, has been identifies as; Dominique McCANN (NIPPI)
 
The investigation led by members of the Homicide Unit revealed that on December 1st 2011, at approximately 9:00 p.m. the victim and a 25 year old male known to her were walking together when a physical altercation occurred.  During the altercation the victim was physically assaulted about the upper body, which resulted in extensive internal injures.
 
Just prior to the physical altercation between the victim and the 25 year old male, the victim was seen talking with an unknown male in the area of Charles Street and Selkirk Avenue.  When the 25 year old male observed this, he immediately approached the unknown male and physical confrontation occurred. 
 
Investigators are requesting this unknown male, or anyone who may have witnessed these events on December 1st, 2011, between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the area of Charles Street and Selkirk Avenue, to contact the Homicide Unit at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).  
 
Donald Jacob GIRARD, 25 years of Winnipeg has been arrested and is facing one count of 2nd degree murder for his alleged involvement in this incident.   
 
 
COMMERICAL BREAK AND ENTER- ARRESTS   C11-262232
On December 19th, 2011 shortly after 3:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a commercial property within the 600 block of Sheppard Street for a report of a break and enter. 
 
Upon arrival officers observed a damaged exterior window and confirmed that the premise was entered with electronic items displaced within.
  
Division 13 uniform members, along with the assistance of a canine unit converged in the area where a canine track was initiated.  The track subsequently led officers to the area of the 1400 block of Fife Street where three suspects were taken into custody without incident.
 
Detectives from the Division 13 Crime Unit continued with the investigation and learned the identity of the fourth outstanding suspect.  At approximately 1:00 p.m. police attended to a location within the 1st 100 block of Marlow Court where upon seeing officers the suspect fled from police.  After a brief foot pursuit, and with the assistance of a canine unit, a 14 year old male was tracked to a rear yard of the 200 block of Mapleglen Drive. 
 
Division 13 Crime Unit members continued with the investigation.  Four male youth, aged 12, 14 and two 13 year olds, will be facing a number of property related crimes.
