Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

ROAD WATCH PROGRAM
On the weekend of May 13th to May 15th, 2011, the Winnipeg Police Service conducted the "Road Watch" program between 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. in the following areas:
 
Portage Avenue and Moray Street - 163 vehicles were stopped, 1 suspended driver, 1 Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) – Warning.
 
Salter Street and Aberdeen Avenue - 174 vehicles were stopped, 1 suspended driver.
 
Pembina Highway and Adamar Road - 60 vehicles were stopped, 2 ASD Warnings and 1 Impaired Driver (Over .08).
 
During this time frame, members utilized an Automated Licence Plate Reader and reviewed 1236 vehicle's status and stopped 397 vehicles. As a result, 34 Provincial Offence Notices were issued, 7 ASD tests were administered with 4 individuals passing, 3 warnings, resulting in 24 hr suspensions for 3 drivers and 1 driver was charged with impaired driving. Two drivers were found to be suspended and had their vehicles impounded for 30 days.
 
Since the Road Watch program began in April 2011, Winnipeg Police Service members have charged 10 drivers with driving over .08, 3 for refusing to provide a breath sample, 14 drivers received 24 hour suspensions after registering a Warning on the roadside screening device. As well, 243 Provincial Offence Notices were issued for various Highway Traffic Act offences.
 
The Road Watch program will operate during the May Long Weekend from May 20th to May 23rd, 2011.
 
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION – MEDICAL EMERGENCY C11-101316
On May 19th, 2011 at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers responded to the area of Taylor Avenue and Stafford Street regarding a motor vehicle collision.
 
The investigation has revealed that a van being operated by a 56 year old male drove up onto the curb subsequently striking a nearby building.
 
The male driver was conveyed to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
 
At this stage of the investigation, it appears that the male driver suffered a medical emergency prior to the collision occurring.
 
The investigation is continuing.  
 
 
STABBING C11-101936
On May 19th, 2011 at approximately 11:30 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident in the area of the 500 block of St. Mary Avenue.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 20 year old female and 39 year old female were walking in the area of the back lane near the 200 block of Balmoral Street when they were approached by an unknown male. The male requested a cigarette but one could not be provided. It was at this time the male became aggressive and physically assaulted the 20 year old female to the upper body. After being assaulted, the victim realized that she had been cut to the upper body. During the confrontation, the 39 year old female was also assaulted to the upper body.
 
The male suspect is described as: Aboriginal in appearance, 26-32 years of age, 5'6" tall, with long thin brown hair in a ponytail with bangs.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 1 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
STABBING C11-102069
On May 20th, 2011 at approximately 3:30 a.m., Uniform members responded to a stabbing incident in the area of the 600 block of Portage Avenue.
 
Officers located a 17 year old male with upper body injuries consistent with being stabbed. The male was conveyed to hospital where his received treatment and is listed in stable condition.
 
No arrest(s) have been made. The investigation is continuing by members of the District 1 Crime Unit.
 
 
STABBING C11-102093
On May 20th, 2011 at approximately 4:20 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to a suite located in the area of the first 100 block of Mayfair Place regarding a stabbing incident.
 
The investigation has revealed that two males were socializing in a suite when they became involved in a dispute. The argument escalated at which time a19 year old male produced a knife and stabbed a 26 year old male victim multiple times to the upper body. The victim was transported to hospital and is presently in stable condition.
 
The 19 year old male was taken into custody and is facing weapon related charges as a result of the incident.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 6 Crime Unit.
