Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

Friday, May 6th, 2011

SERIOUS MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION              C11-90481
On Friday, May 6th, 2011 at approximately 3:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members, along with Emergency Services Responders were dispatched to a serious motor vehicle collision in the area of Lucas Avenue and Brookside Boulevard (Route 90). 
 
Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle that appeared to have collided with a parked semi tractor trailer in a parking lot in the area of the 500 block of Oak Point Highway.  A 33 year old male was transported to the hospital in critical condition while a 32 year old female was transported in stable condition. 
 
At this point in the investigation, it appears that the car had been travelling northbound on Route 90 and had crossed into the southbound lanes, subsequently colliding with the parked semi truck. 
 
Police are investigating whether excessive speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors.  
 
Collision analysts from the Central Traffic Unit are currently on scene and both north and southbound Route 90 remain closed as the investigation continues.

SERIOUS ASSAULT                                         C11-90434
On Friday, May 6th, 2011 at approximately 1:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to the area of Maryland Street and Cumberland Avenue for a report of an injured male.
 
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male who appeared to have been physically assaulted.  Paramedics attended and transported the male to the hospital in critical condition. 
 
This investigation is still ongoing at this time by Members of the Majors Crimes Unit and anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
STOLEN VEHICLE- ARRESTS                            C11-90474
On Friday, May 7th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Division 11 Uniform Members observed a stolen vehicle in the area of Notre Dame Avenue and Carlton Street. 
 
As a result of a coordinated effort by a number of police units this vehicle was stopped in the area of Isabel Street and Logan Avenue and a number of youths have been taken into custody. 
 
This investigation is ongoing by Members of the Division 12 Crime Unit and no further information is available at this time.
 
 
CANADA WIDE WARRANT- ARREST                C11-89928
On Thursday, May 5th, 2011, acting on information received Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit, with the assistance of Uniform Members, located a male that been wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant since November 2002. 
 
The warrant had been issued by the Waterloo Regional Police for three counts of Sexual Assault. 
 
Paul Garreth STEPHENS, 36 years, of Waterloo, Ontario has been arrested on the strength of the warrant and he remains in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
