Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

11:30 a.m.
 
 
GROW OPERATION ARREST                         R11-33477
As a result of an ongoing investigation by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Green Team (Drug Unit), a Controlled Drug and Substance Act search warrant was executed at a residence in the first 100 block of Pinetree Crescent on May 2, 2011.
 
Due to the efforts of numerous officers involved which included the Tactical Support Team, the following items were located and seized:
 
  • Approximately 590 Marihuana Plants – estimated street value of $600,000.00
  • Approximately 50 grams of Cannabis Resin – estimated street value of $1250.00
  • Grow Operation Equipment - $14,000.00
 
A 31 year old male was arrested and will be facing the following charges:
 
-          Produce Cannabis Marihuana
-          Produce Cannabis Resin
-          Possess for the Purpose of Trafficking x 2 and
-          Theft of Telecommunications.
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
 
 
SHOOTING INVESTIGATION                           C11-88764
On Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 at approximately 12:45 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a residence within the 300 block of College Avenue for a report of male that had been shot. 
 
Upon arrival officers located an 18 year old male suffering from a gun shot wound to his lower body.  Paramedics attended and the male was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released. 
 
At this time, officers have learned that an altercation had occurred between the 18 year old male and a group of males which resulted in a firearm discharge occurring, striking him in the lower body. 
 
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Major Crimes Unit and anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
VEHICLE ROBBERY- ARREST                        C11-88651
On Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 at approximately 9:50 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Officers responded to the 1st 100 block of West Gate for a report of vehicle that had just been stolen by a male with a gun.   
 
Upon arrival officers located a 23 year old male victim who advised that he had been driving on West Gate near Blanchard Avenue when he stopped the van to remove some garbage bags that were in the middle of the roadway.  As he exited his vehicle he was confronted by a male suspect who was armed with a firearm. The suspect male demanded the vehicle and proceeded to drive off.    
 
Police attended and all efforts to locate the vehicle were unsuccessful.  Later in the evening, the Winnipeg Police Service was advised that the suspect male had contacted the RCMP advising that he was travelling east on Highway #1.  
 
Assisting RCMP officers located the vehicle in the ditch area on Highway #1, in the Rural Municipality of St. Annes, Manitoba.  The suspect male was observed within the van however he initially refused officers commands to exit the vehicle.  When the suspect exited the vehicle he was in possession of a firearm and pointed it in the direction of officers causing them to flee for cover.  
 
A short time later, the suspect relinquished the firearm, which was later determined to an imitation, and he was taken into custody.  
There were no injuries reported during this incident. 
 
Christopher Devon MILLER, 21 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident:
 
-          Assault peace officer with weapon or causing bodily harm X3
-          Assault with intent to resist arrest X3
-          Imitation firearm- use while committing offence
-          Imitation firearm- use during flight
-          Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
-          Robbery with imitation firearm
 
MILLER has been detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. 
 
 
CDSA WARRANT- ARRESTS                          C11-87991
As previously released, on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 at approximately 9:00 a.m., as result of an investigation initiated by the Division 11 Crime Unit, various units from the Winnipeg Police Service executed a Controlled Drug and Substance search warrant at a residence within the 400 block of Victor Street. 
 
As a result, several individuals were located and removed from the home and the continued investigation has led to the seizure of approximately 20- one quarter gram rocks of crack cocaine with an estimated street value of $380.00. 
 
Kimberley Nicole GREEN 24 years of Winnipeg is facing the following charge for her alleged involvement in this incident; Possessing a controlled drug or substance - COCAINE.  She has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. 
 
A 24 year old male was arrested for Break and Enter- Theft, Possession of goods obtained by crime as well as an outstanding warrant for arrest.
 
An 18 year old male and 21 year old female were also arrested on outstanding warrants that were in effect.
 
A 16 year old male youth was arrested for Personation and an outstanding arrest warrant.  
 
 
HIGH RIVER LEVEL ADVISORY
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind the public that due to high river levels and fast moving currents, river conditions continue to be extremely dangerous.
 
Members of the public are requested to refrain from the use of boats on the river system as hidden debris may still be present causing hazardous conditions.
 
Please be advised that the boating prohibition remains in effect until further notice. 
 
Members of the public are also requested to stay away from all river banks and dikes at this time.
      
Parents and teachers are urged to warn children of the dangers of playing in or near bodies of water, such as rivers, storm water retention ponds (man-made lakes), creeks, streams, and ditches.
