BICYCLE SAFETY ADVISORY
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind motorists to be cautious and share the roadway with cyclists.  With warmer weather, comes an increased volume of bicycle traffic.
 
Cyclists, just like vehicles are required to comply with all signs, traffic control devices and rules governing the operation of a vehicle on a roadway. The Winnipeg Police Service is reminding motor vehicle operators to be courteous to cyclists and share the roadway with them. The Service is also encouraging cyclists to wear reflective clothing, helmets and operate their bicycle in a safe and legal manner.
 
Police will be conducting enforcement to ensure that all vehicles and cyclists comply with the Highway Traffic Act and related regulations.  
 
 
SUSPICIOUS DEATH INVESTIGATION C11-94547
On May 10, 2011 at approximately 9:20 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Austin Street North after receiving a 911 call.
 
Attending members located a 46 year old male deceased within the residence. Injuries observed to the victim appear suspicious in nature. The cause of death has not been confirmed pending autopsy results.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit and interviews are ongoing.
 
No arrests have been made at this time.

BREAK AND ENTER ARREST C10-98864
The Winnipeg Police Service had previously requested the public's assistance in locating 30 year old Michael Victor MIKOLAJCZYK as a result of two outstanding warrants.
 
MIKOLAJCZYK had been wanted in connection with numerous commercial break and enters that occurred within the City of Winnipeg.
 
The crime spree occurred between August 2008 and October 2010. The incidents are as follows:
 
·        August 1, 2008 - Food store – first 100 block of Stadacona Street.
·        November 30, 2008 – Dental Centre – 600 block of McPhillips Street.
·        November 30, 2008 – Investment business – 200 block of Mountain Avenue.
·        May 8, 2010 – Hair Salon – 2600 block of Portage Avenue.
·        May 9, 2010 – Cellular business – 2600 block of Portage Avenue.
·        May 10, 2010 – Liquor store – 2000 block of Corydon Avenue.
·        July 2, 2010 – 400 block Queenston Street.
·        July 28, 2010 – Health Care business – 1200 block of Henderson Highway.
·        July 30, 2010 – Health Care business – 1700 block of Plessis Road.
·        July 30, 2010 – Health Care business – 1700 block of Regent Avenue West.
 
As a result of the break and enter incidents, a variety of damage was caused to the businesses including an undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise was stolen.
 
On October 1, 2010 members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to a residence in the East Kildonan area of the city in attempt to arrest MIKOLAJCZYK. While doing so, MIKOLAJCZYK fled from police and subsequently approached a female while she was occupying her vehicle. She was forced to drive him out of the area where he made good his escape. She was not injured as a result of the incident.
 
On May 10, 2011 investigators again attended to an address in the East Kildonan area of the city in attempt to arrest MIKOLAJCZYK. Officers located him within the home and placed him under arrest on the strength of the outstanding warrants.
 
Due to the efforts of members from the East District Crime Unit, MIKOLAJCZYK has been charged with: Break and Enter x 10, Wear Disguise x 2 and Kidnapping.
 
He was detained.
 
 
FINANCIAL ROBBERY C11-94291
On May 10, 2011 at approximately 3:00 p.m., Uniform members were dispatched to a financial institution regarding a robbery which had just occurred.
 
The investigation has revealed that two male suspects entered the bank, one of which was armed with a weapon. One of the suspects then proceeded behind the counter and confronted a female employee. Cash was demand and an undisclosed amount was relinquished.
 
The suspects fled the area and no one was injured as a result of the incident.
 
The suspect's area described as:
 
Suspect #1 - Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 5'9" in height, wearing dark clothing and a mask or scarf covering his face.
 
Suspect #2 – Male, unknown race, 5'7" in height, wearing dark clothing and a dark mask.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
