Monday, May 16th, 2011 11:00 a.m. CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK Every year just prior to the May long weekend police agencies from across Canada deploy additional resources to conduct Traffic Enforcement for Canada Road Safety Week. In 2011 Canada Road Safety Week will begin at 12:01 am on May 16th and end at 11:59 pm on May 23rd. Canada Road Safety Week is a National Campaign sponsored by Transport Canada and was developed by the Traffic Committee of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and supported by the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police. This initiative supports "Road Safety Strategy 2015" which has a goal of making Canada's roads the safest in the world. This year's Road Safety Week enforcement will focus on behaviours that put all road users at risk, this includes Impaired Driving, Speeding, the improper use of occupant restraints, and the improper use of Hand held electronic devices. In Manitoba, Impaired Driving is a major contributing factor in 39% of all road fatalities in Manitoba[1]. Speed is also a major contributing factor in 28% of all road fatalities in Manitoba[2]. In 2009 19.7% of people killed in motor vehicle collisions were not wearing seatbelts[3]. Another concerning trend is the number of occurrences of distracted driving contributing to serious collisions. In 2009 distraction was a major contributing factor in 4.0% of Motor Vehicle Collision Fatalities and 6.0% of serious injury collisions[4]. Just slow down.
