Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

  Tuesday, May 10, 2011

INTERNATIONAL WARRANT – ARREST R09-36231
As previously released, on June 15, 2009 a youth patient at a Winnipeg hospital was sexually assaulted on two occasions by a doctor working at the hospital. As a result of the incidents, the victim was not physically injured.

The victim reported the incidents to other on-duty personnel resulting in an investigation being entered into by the Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit.

On June 16, 2009, Walid Ahmed ABDELHAMID was arrested and charged with the following offences as a result of his alleged involvement: Sexual Assault, Sexual Interference and Sexual Exploitation.

He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre, but later released on bail.

In August 2009, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a Warrant for Arrest for ABDELHAMID, for failing to attend court as required pertaining to the incidents dating back to June 2009.

Investigators were notified by Interpol Ottawa that ABDELHAMID had been detained by Greek Authorities on August 6, 2010 while travelling through an airport in Greece. He has detained in Greece since this time on the strength of the warrant issued in Winnipeg.

Canadian and Greek Authorities have been working co-operatively and on April 7, 2011 extradition was approved by Greek Authorities.

On May 4, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit travelled to Athens, Greece for the purpose of returning Walid Ahmed ABDELHAMID, 31 years to Winnipeg.

He was returned to Winnipeg earlier this morning and remains in police custody at this time.

As one can imagine when dealing with circumstances of this nature, the extradition process can be complex and very time consuming. The Winnipeg Police Service would like to thank the following organizations for there assistance in this matter: Greek Authorities, French National Police, Canadian Border Services Agency, Montreal Police Service, Interpol, Justice Canada and Manitoba Justice.
