Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Sunday, May 15th, 2011

CAPSIZED BOAT ON RIVER- ARREST                 C11-97679
On Saturday, May 14th, 2011, at approximately 8:30 p.m. numerous Winnipeg Police Service Members along with Emergency Services Personnel were summoned by witnesses to the river area near the Forks Market for a report of a boat that had capsized. 
 
The investigation has revealed two male occupants were operating a 12 foot aluminium fishing boat with a small horsepower tiller motor.  As the boat was approaching the Forks Market area the boat capsized and both men, who were not wearing life preservers, fell into the Assiniboine River. One of the male managed to climb out of the water onto a pile of driftwood where he was rescued by members of the Winnipeg Fire Department. 
 
According to a number of witnesses on scene, the second male was observed to go under the water and did not resurface near the Promenade Bridge.  At this time the 37 year old male from Winnipeg, has not yet been located and he is presumed drowned.
 
Division 11 Uniform Members with the assistance of Central Traffic Unit continued with this investigation.  As a result, Johnny Roy PETRIEW, 35 years of Winnipeg has been charged with: 
 
-          Impaired operation of a vessel causing death and
-          After causing death failure to provide breath samples- Vessel/ Aircraft
 
He has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. 
 
 
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION                                 C11-97317
As previously released, on Saturday, May 14th, 2011 shortly before noon, Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a residence within the 1000 block of Edderton Avenue for a report of a suspicious death. 
 
Upon arrival officers located an adult female deceased within the residence.  The victim has been identified as Gina Swanson, 33 years of Winnipeg
 
A cause of death has not yet been determined, pending the results of an autopsy.   
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit and anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is asked to contact them at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY INVESTIGATION        C11-97958
On Sunday, May 15th, 2011 at approximately 2:40 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members attended to a pizza business located in the 1100 block of Concordia Avenue for a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred by two male suspects.
 
Upon arrival officers located a 54 year old male employee who appeared to have been assaulted.  Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition, where he remains at this time. 
 
This investigation is continuing.
