ARSON INVESTIGATION- ARREST                 C13-142880
On August 6, 2013 shortly after 11:00 a.m. emergency services personnel responded to an apartment building within the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue for reports of a strong smell of gas coming from within the building.
 
Upon arrival, police and fire crews evacuated the apartment building along with neighbouring buildings and the Winnipeg Fire Department Hazmat Team was deployed.  
 
Emergency Personnel located combustible materials within a suite and members of the Arson Strike Force Unit continued with the investigation.
 
A suspect male was identified and at approximately 1:20 p.m. he was taken into custody without incident in the area of the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue.
 
As a result of his alleged involvement in this incident, Joel Donald CALDER, 49 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:
 

  • Arson- Disregard for Human Life
  • Arson- Damage to Property
  • Possession of Incendiary Material
  • Explosives- Intent to Cause Damage to Property

 
CALDER has been detained in custody. 
 
 
COMMERCIAL BREAK AND ENTER           C13-156293
On August 6, 2013 just before 4:30 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 11 Officers responded to a burglar alarm at a commercial business within the 900 block of Portage Avenue. 
 
Upon arrival officers discovered that the front door of the business had been smashed and entry had been gained.  A number of Canon and Nikon cameras and lens were stolen from the business.
 
Anyone who has any information regarding this incident or the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators from the Division 11 Crime Unit at (204) 986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477). 
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY                         C13-157177
On August 7, 2013 at approximately 10:15 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a jewellery store in the area of Main Street and Lombard Avenue for a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that a lone male suspect, armed with a crow bar, had entered the store and proceeded to smash the jewellery cabinets. 
 
The suspect fled the store with an assortment of merchandise.
 
There were no reported injuries as a result of this incident.
