VEHICLE ROBBERY                                  C13-156085

On August 5, 2013 at approximately 7:30 p.m. a 59 year old male and an 82 year old female were at a car wash within the 500 block of Madison Avenue when a suspect male with his identity disguised, approached their Sport Utility Vehicle.   The suspect male, who was armed with a firearm, entered the vehicle and demanded that the victims take him to a bank machine.
 
The male victim drove the vehicle to a financial institution in the area of Ellice Avenue and Empress Street.  The male victim and the suspect exited the vehicle into the parking lot when the victim began to yell at passers-by to contact police.  The suspect immediately struck the male victim in the upper body, causing non-life threatening injuries.  The female victim was able to escape the vehicle, prior to the suspect entering the vehicle and fleeing eastbound on Ellice Avenue. 
 
A number of police units attended to the scene.  Shortly before 9:00 p.m. officers recovered the stolen Hyundai Tucson abandoned in the parking lot of a recreation centre within the 900 block of Sargent Avenue. 
 
The suspect is described as:
 

  • Male, 6'1" to 6'4" tall, with a thin build.  He was wearing dark coloured clothing and a shirt or sweater concealing his face.  The suspect was also carrying a backpack.

 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.  Anyone who has any information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
ROADWATCH PROGRAM STATISTICS
In partnership with Manitoba Public Insurance, this past August Long Weekend, the Winnipeg Police Service Central Traffic Unit, assisted by Uniform Officers, operated the "RoadWatch Program".  This Program utilized various check stops throughout the city.    
 
A total of 1017 vehicles were stopped during the RoadWatch Program resulting in the following:
 

  • 30 Provincial Offence Notices were issued
  • Three Impaired Driving arrests
  • Five Alcohol Screening Device readings of Warn, and
  • One arrest for Drive Suspended

 
The RoadWatch Program will continue throughout the summer in an attempt to make our roads safe for everyone.  
 
 
AUXILIARY FORCE CADETS RECRUITMENT
Recruitment is now underway for Auxiliary Force Cadet Class #7.  This seventh class of Auxiliary Force Cadets is tentatively set to begin in January 2014.
 
Orientation Sessions for the Auxiliary Force Cadet Program will take place at the Winnipeg Police Training Academy, 130 Allard Avenue on:

Monday, August 26, 2013, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
