Winnipeg Police Service News Release

  Monday, January 16, 2011

3:00 p.m.

In response to media inquiries regarding photo enforcement in school zones, the Winnipeg Police Service has issued the following statement:

PHOTO RADAR ENFORCEMENT IN SCHOOL ZONES
As part of our commitment to the citizens of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Police Service provides public advisories regarding the set up of photo enforcement in construction zones.

Initially the Winnipeg Police Service had considered a public advisory regarding photo radar enforcement in the school zone near Grant Avenue and Nathaniel Street.  It was determined that public notifications regarding enforcement in school zones has not been our practice and was not necessary as enforcement is conducted daily in school zones throughout the city.

Speed limits along Grant Avenue at Nathaniel Street have been enforced by uniform officers for several years.  Recent efforts have been undertaken utilizing Photo Enforcement to complement this in an effort to reduce the number of violations.

While photo enforcement in the area of Grant Avenue and Nathaniel Street has only recently been utilized, the deployment of a photo radar vehicle has been used in similar situations where multiple lanes of traffic are monitored, for instance Portage Avenue.

The Winnipeg Police Service will continue its efforts in reducing the number of speed violations that occur in school zones within the City of Winnipeg.  School zones are areas where the safety of students of all ages is paramount.  The Service will continue to utilize all types of speed enforcement to target those drivers who choose to drive over the speed limit.

Our message to drivers continues to be, "Just Slow Down".
