ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON – ARREST C12-877
As previously released, on January 2, 2012, just before 11:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service members responded to a shopping centre within the 1400 block of Portage Avenue for a report a theft incident. 
 
Upon arrival officers learned that three male security guards were attempting to apprehend a male suspect who fled the store with merchandise to an awaiting vehicle. Once near the vehicle the suspect dispensed a chemical towards the security guards as well as produced a knife. 
 
The suspect fled the scene in a previously reported stolen vehicle. One of the security guards was transported to the hospital in stable condition for injuries to his upper body. 
 
The investigation continued by members of the Division 12 Crime Unit.
 
On January 4, 2012, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Alexander Franklin HAITS, 28 years was located in the Wolseley area of the city and placed under arrest as a result of his alleged involvement.
 
He has been charged with the following:
 
  • Assault with a Weapon x 4
  • Robbery with a Weapon
  • Fail to comply with condition Recognizance x 4
  • Theft Over $5000.00
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Possessing controlled drug or substance
  • Several Highway Traffic Act Offences
 
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre. 
 
 
SHOTS - UPDATE C12-1953
As previously released, on January 4, 2012, at approximately 8:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service including other emergency personnel responded to the area of the 600 block of Victor Street regarding the sound of shots.
 
Attending members located damage to the front of the residence as a result of a firearm discharge, including a small fire. No one was injured as a result of the incident.  
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continue to investigate.
 
 
SHOTS – C12-2557
On January 5, 2012, at approximately 5:40 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the sound of shots in the area of the 500 block of Simcoe Street.  
 
Attending members have located evidence to support a firearm discharge took place in the area. No injuries have been reported at this time.
 
The investigating is ongoing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
 
 
ROBBERY WITH A WEAPON C12-2469
On January 5, 2012, at approximately 12:50 a.m., Division 11 Uniform Members responded to a stabbing incident which had occurred in the area of Cumberland Avenue and Kennedy Street.
 
Members located a 32 year old male victim suffering from an injury consistent with being stabbed. He was conveyed to hospital in stable condition.
 
The investigation has revealed that the victim had been confronted by four males who requested a cigarette. The victim continued to walk at which time he was pushed to the ground. Property which included; a backpack, alcohol and phone charger was stolen. The victim was stabbed and the suspects fled the area.
 
Two of the suspects are described as:
 
Suspect1 – Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 18-21 years of age, 5'8" tall, short hair, skinny build, wearing dark clothing.
 
 
Suspect 2- Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 18-21 years of age, 5'10" tall, stocky build and dark clothing.
 
The other suspects could not be described.
 
The investigating is continuing by members of the Division 11 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact investigators at 986-6668 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
VEHICLE ROBBERY C12-1926
On January 4, 2012, at approximately 5:50 a.m., Uniform Members responded to a vehicle robbery incident in the Kildonan Meadows area of the city.
 
Attending members met with the two victims, a 64 year old male and 63 year old female. They advised that while their vehicle was running and left unattended for a short period of time, a male suspect entered the vehicle and began revving the engine, alerting the owners. It was at this time the suspect struck the female victim as he drove off. The male victim chased after the vehicle.
 
The female victim sustained upper and lower body injuries requiring medical assistance.
 
The stolen vehicle which has not yet been recovered is described as: a black 2007 Nissan Altima, Manitoba plate: VAF617.
 
The suspect is described as: Male, Caucasian, 20-25 years of age, short dark scruffy hair, wearing a dark jacket.
 
The investigating is continuing by members of the East District Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact investigators at 986-2857 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
DRUG AND WEAPON – ARRESTS C12-2182
On January 4, 2012, members of the East District Community Support Unit, with the assistance of the Street Crimes Unit, Tactical Support Team and the Drug Unit executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence in the Elmwood area of the city.
 
Due to their efforts the following items were located and seized:
 
  • 18 Marihuana plants – estimated street value – $21,000.00
  • 49 grams marihuana – estimated street value - $490.00
  • 2 oz. marihuana – estimated street value - $480.00
  • Grow operating equipment - $500.00
  • 4 improperly stored rifles
 
A 47 year old male, 44 year old female and 16 year old male were located within the home and arrested.
 
They are facing numerous weapon and drug related offences.
 
They were released on a Promise to Appear.
