Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

  Thursday, December 9th, 2010

 
HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION – UPDATE - ARREST C10-152849
As previously released, on July 8th, 2010 at 11:56 p.m., Uniform members responded to the 100 block of McKenzie Street regarding shots being fired.
 
Attending members located a male with upper body injuries. Dylan Cody FERLAND, 18 years was conveyed to hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to injuries sustained.
 
As a result of an ongoing investigation, on September 30th, 2010, William Evan LAPORTE, 21 years and Dillon Douglas LECOY, 18 years were charged with 1st Degree Murder and detained in custody.
 
A Canada Wide Warrant was issued for Stephan Mitchell MCKAY, 32 years.
 
On December 3rd, 2010 McKay was arrested by members of the Calgary Police Service on the strength of the warrant. Winnipeg Police Service Detectives have since travelled to Calgary, Alberta and executed the warrant. MCKAY has been returned to Winnipeg, Manitoba and detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.   
 
 
FESTIVE SEASON CHECKSTOP IMPAIRED DRIVING ARRESTS
 
December 5th
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10/0277240
On Sunday December 5th, 2010, shortly after 8:00 PM a male was operating a vehicle in the area of Pembina Highway and Lemay Avenue when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 51 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive while Suspended.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10/0277340
On Sunday December 5th, 2010, shortly after 11:00 PM a male was operating a vehicle in the area of River Avenue and Osborne Street when he collided with a parked vehicle. Witnesses called police and members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program responded and arrested the male.
 
As a result of this incident Phillip Gordon STRANGER, 24 years of Winnipeg has been charged with Drive Impaired, Refuse Breath Samples and Drive while Suspended.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10/0277271
On Sunday December 5th, 2010, shortly after 9:00 PM a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Coldstream Avenue and Blue Heron Crescent when he became stuck in a snow bank. The male left the scene on foot so witnesses contacted Police. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to a residence nearby where the male was arrested.
 
As a result of this incident a 48 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
5 Alcohol Screening Device (ASD) Warnings /24 hour suspensions issued.
 
 
December 6th
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10/0278087
On Tuesday December 7th, 2010, shortly before 1:30 AM a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Portage Avenue and Wall Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 21 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired, Drive Over 80 mgs% and Fail To Comply With Conditions of an Undertaking.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10/0278061
On Monday December 6th, 2010, shortly before midnight a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Portage Avenue and Erin Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 36 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
6 ASD Warnings/24 hour suspensions issued.
 
December 7th
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10/0278701
On Tuesday December 7th, 2010, shortly before 9:00 PM a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Century Street and Ellice Avenue when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 50 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
3 ASD Warnings/24 hour suspensions issued.
 
 
ATTEMPTED VEHICLE ROBBERY R10-101475
On December 8th, 2010 members of the Winnipeg Police Service received a report of an attempted vehicle robbery which occurred on December 7th at approximately 3:45 p.m., in the area of the 800 block of Keewatin Street.
 
Officers have learned that a 72 year old male was about to enter his parked vehicle after shopping in the area when he was confronted by a male unknown to him. The suspect demanded the victim's vehicle. It was at this time the victim entered his vehicle, started it and proceeded to reverse. The suspect attempted to open the car door but was unsuccessful. He then produced an unknown object and smashed out the driver's side window. The suspect reached into the car and again made attempts to open the car door.
 
During the incident a Good Samaritan including store security came to the victim's aid, subsequently scarring off the suspect.
 
The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.
 
The suspect is described as follows: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 20-22 years of age, 6'2" tall, approximately 160 lbs. and numerous scratches on his face.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the District 3 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident or the identity of the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
THEFT INVESTIGATION – ARREST C10-235868
Between 2002 and 2010, an adult male suspect became involved in a crime spree where he would pose as a painter and offer his services in both new houses and apartment buildings.
 
Once the suspect would gain entry into a home for the purpose of a paint inspection, he would distract the victim(s) at which time money, jewellery and credit cards were stolen.
 
As a result of a lengthy investigation by members of the District 2 Community Support Unit, Wilfred Dennis LAVALLEE, 60 years has been arrested and charged with numerous offences which include, theft, fraud and unlawfully in a dwelling house.
 
He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
The investigation is continuing.
