Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5th, 2010  

 
 
TRAGIC INCIDENT ON THE RIVER- UPDATE        C10-276345
Yesterday, on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 at approximately 3:35 p.m. the Winnipeg Police Service received an emergency call reporting that a person was in the Red River just south of the Disraeli Bridge.  
 
Emergency Responders arrived on scene on met with a 10 year old male child who had been pulled from the river by a passing motorist. Officers then received Information that a 6 year old boy had also gone into the water and had not surfaced. 
 
Responders immediately began searching the area, and rescue equipment was deployed to enter the waterway. 
 
It is believed that the two boys had been playing on an ice covered section of the river when the ice gave away sending both boys into the water.  It is believed the 6 year old boy went under the ice prior to the arrival of passerby. 
 
Rescuers searched the area for a number of hours prior to calling off the search. 
 
The 10 year old boy was conveyed to the hospital in stable condition.
 
Sadly this incident has now moved into the recovery phase.  The Winnipeg Police Service Dive Unit is currently assessing the feasiblity of a recovery dive within the coming days.  
 
BREAK AND ENTER- ARRESTS         C10-276054
On Friday, December 3rd, 2010 at approximately 4:30 a.m. a male suspect allegedly attended to the rear of a residence within the 1st 100 block of Oak Street where he entered through an insecure rear door. Once inside the residence this suspect located a purse, which contained house and car keys as well as an assortment of other valuables. The homeowner was awakened by the noise and the suspect male fled the residence. 
 
Division 16 Uniform Members attended to the area however the suspect male made good his escape. Located in the area by Officers was the discarded the purse, which had all valuables, including the homeowner's keys removed.
 
Then on Saturday, December 4th, 2010 during the early morning hours, the above noted male suspect, along with two other male youths attended to the River Heights area near Wellington Crescent where they entered numerous unlocked cars, stealing small amounts of loose cash.
 
At approximately 6:15 a.m., the same male suspect returned to the residence in the 1st 100 block of Oak Street and attempted to gain entry into the residence with the previously stolen house keys.  The homeowner observed the male approach her residence and immediately notified police. 
 
Division 16 patrolling Uniform Members, along with a Canine Unit, attended to the area and observed three suspect males running through yards. One residence within the 200 block of Queenston Street sustained property damage as a result of the suspects attempts to evade police. 
 
The suspects then allegedly broke into a detached rear garage within the 200 block of Waterloo Street where they attempted to hide from officers. 
 
As a result of the combined effort by Uniform Officers as well as the Canine Unit, the suspects were located inside the garage and taken into custody without incident. 
 
The Division 16 Crime Unit continued with this lengthy investigation which has resulted in the arrests of three youth males, aged 14, 16 and 17 years. 
 
The 16 year old male, who was detained, has been charged with:
-          Break Enter and Theft
-          Break and Enter with Intent
-          Break and Enter
-          Breach of Probation (x2)
-          Mischief Under $5000 (x1)
 
The 14 and 17 year old male are both facing charges of Break and Enter and Mischief Under $5000. The 17 year old youth is also facing a charge of Breach of Probation and he had been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre. 
 
Investigators believe that numerous vehicles within this area had been entered and are encouraging homeowners to report these incidents to the police.  
 
 
FESTIVE CHECK STOP PROGRAM- DAY TWO RESULTS
The Winnipeg Police Service Central Traffic Unit has provided the results from the second day of the Festive Check Stop Program.   During the second day of enforcement, 116 vehicles were checked by officers.
 
In addition to the Impaired Driving Arrests listed below, 5 individuals had their Driver's Licence's suspended for 24 hours under the Highway Traffic Act as a result a reading of "Warn" on an Approved Screening Device.
 
The Blood Alcohol Concentrations in the following arrests ranged from 100 mgs% to 190 mgs%.
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST                      C10-276569
On Saturday December 4th, 2010, shortly after 10:00 p.m. a male was operating a vehicle erratically in a parking lot in the 1200 block of St Marys Road.  Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program stopped this vehicle.
 
As a result of this incident, a 60 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired, Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST                    C10-276747
On Saturday December 4th, 2010, shortly after 2:30 a.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Arlington Street and Pacific Avenue when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program for his manner of driving.
 
As a result of this incident a 61 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
IMPAIRED DRIVER- ARREST                             C10-276752
On Saturday December 5th, 2010, shortly after 2:30 a.m. a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Rorie Street and McDermot Avenue when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program.
 
As a result of this incident a 54 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.
 
The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
 
In addition to the traffic related offences, Checkstop Program Officers also arrested two adult males; one for Uttering Threats to Kill and Indecent Act, the second for an outstanding arrest warrant.
