2010 FESTIVE CHECK STOP LAUNCH
The Winnipeg Police Service is set to begin the 2010 Festive Season CHECK STOP program, a campaign dedicated to reducing the number of impaired driving offences that occur within the city of Winnipeg. Impaired Driving is a Criminal Offence.

One of the Service's 2010 Goals is to enhance Road Safety for the citizens of Winnipeg.

During the month of December and including New Year's Eve, motorists can expect to see an increased presence of police officers both during the day and the evening.

Enforcement will be specifically targeted towards those drivers who choose to endanger the lives of others sharing the roadways by operating their vehicles while impaired either by alcohol, drugs or a combination of the two. Officers will continue to use all tools at their disposal, including physical coordination tests and drug evaluations, to detect and arrest those who choose to drive impaired.

The key word in this last statement that everyone has to remember is CHOOSE

All drivers have the ability to make a choice. The right choice is to ensure you have a plan for alternative transportation if you decide to drink. Take a cab, call a friend, have a designated driver.

The Winnipeg Police Service has assessed the apparent increase in the number of impaired driving arrests made during the summer months. We will be continuing our efforts to improve road safety. The repercussions of Impaired Driving are vast and too often result in the tragic and totally unnecessary loss of life.

As part of the enforcement initiative the names of drivers charged with impaired driving related offences during the Festive Season will continue to be released through news releases.

Drivers are asked to take responsibility for their actions to help insure that they and those who share the roadway with them can have a safe and enjoyable festive season.

Our message to drivers is to Make the Right Choice…do not Drink and Drive.
