Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

11:00 a.m.
 
 
ASSAULT INVESTIGATION- ARREST         C11-215181
On October 11th, 2011 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members were advised of a fight that was occurring near the intersection of Main Street and Higgins Avenue. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a 30 year old male victim suffering from serious injuries to his upper body.  Paramedics attended and transported the victim to the hospital in stable condition.     
 
Officers on scene also located a 24 year old male suspect who was being held by a number of citizens who had witnessed the assault.  A second male suspect was located nearby and arrested without incident.
 
The continued investigation by Division 11 Uniform Officers revealed that the 30 year old victim and a 24 year old male, who were known to one another, were in the area of Higgins Avenue and Main Street when they became involved in a verbal argument.  This argument escalated into a physical altercation between the two males, at which time the 30 year old victim proceeded to walk away.
 
The 24 year old male followed the victim and armed himself with large pieces of rock that he had located nearby.  The suspect male then attended to the victim and began assaulting the victim about his upper body.  When the victim fell to the ground a second suspect male approached and proceeded to kick the victim about the body several times.   
 
Harry Wellington GEGWETCH, 42 years and Lawrence THOMPSON, 24 years, both from Winnipeg, have been charged with one count of aggravated assault for their alleged involvement in this incident.  THOMPSON is also facing one count of failing to comply with the conditions of his recognizance. 
 
Both males have been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.   
 
 
 
STRONGARM ROBBERY- ARREST     C11-215194
On October 11th, 2011 at approximately 5:45 p.m. Winnipeg Police East District Officers responded to the area of Brewster Street and Kildare Avenue West for a report of a female that had just been robbed. 
 
Upon arrival officers met with the 20 year old female victim who was treated on scene for upper body injuries. 
 
Officers learned that the victim had exited a transit bus in the area when a suspect male approached her from behind.  The suspect began to choke the victim and demanded she turn over personal property.
 
Officers, with the assistance of a patrolling Canine Unit and AIR1 began an extensive search of the area for the suspect.  In a coordinated effort by all members, the suspect male was located hiding in a yard within the 100 block of Larche Avenue by the Canine Unit.
 
A 16 year old male has been charged with the following offences: 
 
- Robbery with a weapon
- Overcoming resistance to commit an indictable offence and
- Failure to comply with a sentence order
 
He has been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
  
  
MISSING PERSON– TANYA JANE NEPINAK    R11-89284
As previously released, the Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public's assistance in locating a missing 31 year old female, Tanya Jane NEPINAK.
 
NEPINAK was last seen on September 13th, 2011 at approximately 11:00 p.m. in the Sherbrook Street area of Downtown Winnipeg.
 
                                            
 
 
NEPINAK is described as Aboriginal, 5'3" tall, approximately 90 pounds with long brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a black hat, white t-shirt, a longer black jacket, and black pants.
 
NEPINAK has a tattoo of T-A-N-Y-A on her left hand fingers and a large red birthmark on the left side of her forehead. 
 
Investigators are concerned for NEPINAK's well-being.
 
Anyone with information regarding NEPINAK's whereabouts is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250.
