Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

PUBLIC ADVISORY - FRAUD INVESTIGATION CONTINUING R11-89275
Due to an ongoing investigation since September 13th, 2011, the Winnipeg Police Service has now been alerted to thirteen separate incidents involving fraudulent telephone calls being made to unsuspecting residents.
 
The investigation has revealed that the suspect(s) have been targeting elderly female members of the Polish community. The suspect appears to speak Polish fluently requesting money from the victim due to an urgent matter. On one recent occasion, the victim was defrauded of $6000.00. 
 
The Winnipeg Police Service is encouraging members of the public to discuss this scam with friends and or family members who they feel may be vulnerable to these pressure tactics.   
The investigation is continuing by members of the Commercial Crime Unit. Anyone who has received a call of this nature or has information regarding the suspect(s) is asked to contact investigators at 986-3812.
 
A call trace (*57) should immediately be activated upon the caller hanging up in order to assist our officers with their investigation.
 
 
FIRE C11-210767
On October 5th, 2011, at approximately 4:30 p.m., emergency personnel responded to a working fire at a duplex located in the first 100 block of Pike Crescent.
 
Three occupants were conveyed to hospital in stable condition.
 
Damage to both residences is estimated at $400,000.00. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
 
Members of the Arson Strike Force continue to investigate.
