Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- ARREST   C11-180964
As previously released, on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 just after 9:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to the area of Main Street and Sutherland Avenue for a report of a deceased female that had been located. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a deceased female, later identified as April Helen HORNBROOK, 24 years of Winnipeg, in the rear of a vacant building within the 700 block of Main Street.  The victim appeared to have injuries to her upper body.
 
A cause of death has been determined to be blunt force trauma to the upper body.
 
On September 30th, 2011 shortly before 11:30 p.m., as a result of the continued investigation led by members of the Homicide Unit, a suspect male was taken into custody at a residence within the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue.
 
Max Maurice RICHARD, 36 years of Winnipeg has been charged with 2nd degree murder for his alleged involvement in this incident. 
 
RICHARD has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. 
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                      C11-208145
On October 2nd, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m. residents within the 400 block of Sumach Street were alerted to a garage that was on fire and police were notified. 
 
Upon arrival, officers observed the double detached garage to be fully engulfed in flames.  Fire crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire.  Initial damage estimates to the structure as well as the contents, are valued $100,000.
 
A cause of the fire has yet to be determined.   This investigation is continuing. 
 
 
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION   C11-208163
On Sunday, October 2nd, 2011 just after 3:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were at the East District Station when they heard sounds of a motor vehicle collision.
 
Officers immediately attended to the area of Plessis Road and Dugald Road where they located a single vehicle that was fully engulfed in flames. 
 
Emergency services responders attended and subsequently extinguished the fire.  At this time, there have been two confirmed fatalities.      
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit and the Identification Unit. 
 
Both eastbound and westbound lanes of Dugald Road, between Plessis Road and Bournais Drive will remain closed for several hours as this investigation continues.
