Winnipeg Police Service News Release

Thursday, August 25th, 2011 4:15 p.m.     ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON- UPDATE ARRESTS    C11-178995 As previously released, on Thursday, August 25th, 2011 at approximately 11:15 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service members responded to the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue for a report of a male that had been assaulted.    Upon arrival, officers located a 48 year old male suffering from serious upper body injuries.  Paramedics attended and transported the victim to the hospital in critical condition.    Officers have learned that a group of people were outside of a residence within the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue when two male suspects approached them.  A brief conversation and subsequent confrontation occurred between this group and the suspects.  During the confrontation an 18 year old female was struck in the upper body by one of the suspects in possession of a bat.  A 48 year old male attempted to intervene and he was struck a number of times in the upper body.    The female victim was treated and released while the male victim remains in hospital in critical, but stabilized condition.    A number of individuals were located nearby and were taken into custody.    As a result of the continued investigation two male youths, both 15 years of age, have been charged with the following offences:   - Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose - Assault with a weapon - Aggravated assault   One of the youths has also been charged with two counts of failing to comply with a sentence.     For further information contact either: Constable Natalie Aitken, Public Information Officer Constable Jason Michalyshen, Public Information Officer Office: (204)986-3061 Fax: (204) 986-3267 Email: WPS-PIO@Winnipeg.ca   Web: www.winnipeg.ca/Police
