Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

  Saturday, August 20th, 2011 

 
FIGHT INCIDENT C11-175438
On August 20th, 2011 at approximately 2:50 a.m., numerous police resources including other emergency personnel responded to a fight incident involving numerous people in the area of the 1000 block of Garfield Street North.
 
At this stage of the investigation, it appears that two families had previously been socializing at a residence when a domestic dispute erupted between a male and female. The dispute escalated at which time other family members intervened. The conflict continued out onto the street when numerous involved persons armed themselves with various items and began assaulting one another.
 
During the incident, two vehicles being operated by involved persons collided and subsequently struck three pedestrians.
 
As a result of the melee, six individuals were transported to hospital, three in critical condition and three in stable condition.
 
This investigation is in its early stages therefore limited information is available at this time.
 
The investigation is continuing by Divisional Detectives.
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON – ARREST C11-175420
On August 20th, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m., members of the Flight Operations Unit Air 1 were engaged in a search for fleeing suspects in the area of the 500 block of Magnus Avenue, when the Pilot of the aircraft was directly struck by a green laser causing a hazard to flight.
 
The pilot took evasive action to protect himself from the dangers of the laser beam and subsequently placed the aircraft in a position to search for the source of the beam.
 
Over a short period of time Air 1 was hit by the laser on four separate instances. Due to their efforts, members of the aircrew were able to identify the location which the laser was being directed from.
  
At approximately 2:40 a.m., General patrol members were directed to a residence in the 1700 block of Arlington Street at which time a 30 year old male was taken into custody.
 
He is facing the following charges: Assault with a Weapon and Projection of a Directed Bright Light Source at an Aircraft.
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.
  
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING CYCLIST – HIT AND RUN - UPDATE C11-174811
As previously released, on August 19th, 2011 at approximately 1:55 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the area of Mountain Avenue and McGregor Street regarding a serious motor vehicle collision involving a cyclist. Attending members learned that the involved vehicle had since fled the area.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 53 year old male cyclist had been travelling eastbound on Mountain Avenue near McGregor Street when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle turning south onto McGregor Street. After the collision, the vehicle failed to remain at the scene. 
 
The cyclist was conveyed to hospital in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to stable but serious condition.
 
The vehicle of interest is described as a white tractor trailer.


 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information regarding the vehicle of interest to contact investigators at 986-6271.
