Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Sunday, August 28th, 2011

SUSPICIOUS DEATH- HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION      C11-180964
As previously released, on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 just after 9:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to the area of Main Street and Sutherland Avenue for a report of a deceased female that had been located. 
 
Upon arrival officers located a deceased female in the rear of a vacant building within the 700 block of Main Street. The victim appeared to have injuries to her upper body.
 
The deceased female has been identified as April Helen HORNBROOK, 24 years of Winnipeg. 
 
Members of the Homicide Unit are continuing with this investigation. 
 
Anyone who has any information regarding the victim, or anyone who has had any recent contact with the victim, is asked to contact investigators at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
ASSAULT UPDATE- HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION    C11-175470
As previously released, on August 20th, 2011 at approximately 3:25 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a fight involving two males in the area of the 100 block of Burrows Avenue.
 
Attending members located an injured 22 year old male suffering from upper body injuries. He was conveyed to hospital in critical condition, where he had been upgraded to guarded but stable condition.
 
On August 21st, 2011 Division 12 Uniform Members conducted a traffic stop in the area of Portage Avenue and Booth Drive where a suspect male was arrested without incident. 
 
Division 13 Crime Unit Members continued with the investigation and charged a 38 year old male with aggravated assault and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.
 
On August 25th, 2011, Winnipeg Police were notified that the victim has succumbed to his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Robert ROURKE, 22 years of Winnipeg.
 
Gregory Troy GOVEREAU, 38 years of no fixed address is now facing one count of second degree murder for his alleged involvement into this incident.   
 
GOVEREAU was returned back into custody. 
 
 
ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON- ARRESTS        C11-181195
On August 27th, 2011, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a group of individuals had gathered within the west lane of the 800 block of Main Street, when a male who was unknown to the group walked past them and directed comments towards a female within the group. 
 
This 23 year old male continued walking southbound on Main Street. As the male approached Dufferin Avenue this previous group of individuals followed him to this area and a verbal altercation occurred betweenthis male, a 21 year old male who happened to be in the area, and this group. The verbal altercation escalated when one of the suspects in the group produced a knife resulting in the both male victims sustaining a stab wound to the torso area. 
 
When both victims fell to ground as a result of the stabbing, the group proceeded to physically assault both victim's about their upper and lower bodies. 
 
A number of concerned passer-bys contacted police. Upon arrival, officers located the two male victims, aged 21 and 23 years, who were conveyed to the hospital in critical condition for treatment of their injuries.
 
The group of suspects attempted to flee however officers located them within the area and they were taken into custody without incident.
 
Both victims were later upgraded to stable condition. 
 
As a result of the continued investigation by uniform members, division 13 detectives and identification officers, the following individuals have been charged for their alleged involvement into these incidents; 
 
A 32 year old female and a 35 year old male, both from Winnipeg have both been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. 
 
A 24 year old female, of Winnipeg has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose, robbery with a weapon and breach of probation x2.  
 
This incident is continuing by the Division 13 Crime Unit.

FIRE INVESTIGATION- ARREST        C11-181350
On Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at approximately 8:20 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service uniform members responded to the 1st 100 block of Langside Street for a report of a garbage bin that had been set on fire and a suspicious male that was seen within the area. 
 
Upon arrival, fire crews extinguished the fire which had caused approximately $100 to the garbage bin. Patrolling officers, along with a canine unit began searching the area for a suspect male who had fled the scene prior to officer's arrival. 
 
 As a result of a track by the canine unit, a suspect male was located near the river bank area a short distance away, where he was taken into custody without incident. 
 
George Leslie GUIMOND, 53 years of no fixed address, has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident: 
 
-          Arson damage to property and possession of incendiary materials
 
GUIMOND has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
