Winnipeg Police Service News Release

 

  Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

 
 
WEAPONS INVESTIGATION- ARRESTS   C11-166803
On August 9th, 2011 at approximately 12:30 a.m., as a result of an ongoing investigation by members of the Organized Crime Unit, Winnipeg Police Service Uniform members, along with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team and a canine unit, attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Dodge Avenger near the intersection of Antrim Road and Rockspur Street.  The suspect vehicle failed to stop for police members and instead made quick evasive manoeuvres, which resulted in a collision involving three police vehicles.
 
Three suspects, two males and one female, from within the vehicle were taken into custody without incident.  A loaded handgun was located within the vehicle. 
 
As a result of the collision, 3 officers from the Tactical Support Team suffered both lower and upper body injuries.  All three officers were transported to the hospital in stable condition, where two members have been treated and released.  The third officer who sustained a serious upper body injury, has now been released from the hosptial. 
 
Members of the Identification Unit as well as Traffic Collision Investigators assisted with this investigation.  All three police vehicles sustained extensive damage.  
 
Joseph Jordan Carl CHOKEN 19 years and Guy Wesley Vernon STEVENSON 21 years, both of no fixed address, have been charged with a numerous firearms related charges for their alleged involvement in this incident:  
 
- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Ammunition
- Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm/ ammunition
- Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
- Possession of firearm while prohibited X4
 
CHOKEN faces additional charges of:
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm X2
- Fail to comply with condition recognizance X4
- Outstanding warrant of arrest
 
STEVENSON faces additional charges:
- Breach of Probation X3
- Knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm X2
 
Amanda Kay FREEMAN, 23 years of Lorette, Manitoba has been charged:   
- Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm/ ammunition
- Occupant of Motor Vehicle knowing there was a firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm X2
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
- Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Ammunition

BREAK AND ENTER- ARREST            C11-166359
On Monday, August 8th 2011 at approximately 12:15 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service Members were dispatched to a residence within the 500 block of Victor Street for a report of a male suspect seen entering a basement window. 
 
Within minutes, Division 11 Community Support Unit members on bike patrol arrived and surrounded the residence, announcing their presence.  A male suspect exited the residence armed with a large samurai sword and challenged the officer in an aggressive manner.  After verbal commands directed at him the male dropped the knife and was taken into custody without incident. 
 
As a result of the investigation by Division 11 Community Support members, along with the assistance of Division 12 uniform members, Kenneth Clifford CAMPBELL, 27 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement in this incident: 
 
- Break and enter- theft
- Possess weapon for dangerous purpose
- Assault Peace officer with weapon or causing bodily harm
- Fail to Comply with Condition Recognizance X3
- Possessing controlled drug or substance – (OTHER) X2
- Possessing controlled drug or substance - CANNABIS (MARIHUANA)
 
An outstanding warrant was also in effect. CAMPBELL has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. 
 
 
FIRE INVESTIGATION                     C11-166856
On Tuesday, August 9th, 2011 just after 4:30 a.m. emergency services responders were dispatched to a working fire at a condo complex containing numerous suites, within the 200 block of Fairlane Avenue for a report of working fire.
 
Upon arrival, officers and fire-fighters observed the fire to be at the northeast corner of the building.  Six suites sustained damage as a result of the fire.   
 
No residents within the complex were injured.   Estimated damage to the building is in excess of $600,000.
 
This investigation is continuing by members of the Arson Strike Force.  Anyone who has any information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6813 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
