Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

HOMICIDE UPDATE – ARREST C11-97317
As previously released, on Saturday, May 14th, 2011 shortly before noon, Winnipeg Police Service Uniform members responded to a residence within the 1000 block of Edderton Avenue for a report of a suspicious death. 
 
Upon arrival, officers located an adult female deceased within the home. The victim has been identified as Gina SWANSON, 33 years. The investigation has revealed that SWANSON was physically assaulted to the upper body and succumbed to injuries sustained.
 
The investigation has led to the arrest of Schuyler Francis VAN WISSEN, 26 years on August 12th, 2011 in Toronto, Ontario. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit have since transported VAN WISSEN back to Winnipeg on August 13th, 2011.
 
He has been charged with: First Degree Murder and Assault with a Weapon.
 
He has been detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN C11-170534
On August 13th, 2011 at approximately 7:55 p.m., General Patrol members responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian that occurred in the area of Portage Avenue and Cavalier Drive.
 
As a result of the collision, several lanes of Portage Avenue were closed to traffic for a period of time.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 70 year old male was attempting to cross Portage Avenue northbound near Sumach Street. The male victim was struck by a vehicle (Mazda 3) travelling westbound on Portage Avenue.
 
The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition where he remains at this time.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident and have not yet spoken to police is asked to contact investigators at 986-6271.
 
 
RESIDENTIAL BREAK AND ENTER – ARRESTS C11-169958
On August 13th, 2011 at approximately 2:10 a.m., Uniform members, including the Canine Unit responded to the area of the 300 block of Ross Avenue regarding two suspicious males, one of which was armed with a knife.
 
Upon police arrival, it was learned that a nearby suite had recently been broken into and that both male suspects fled the area.
 
The investigation has revealed that the suspects entered a suite subsequently removing a purse and its contents, cellular phones, a knife and several cans of beer. Witnesses observed the suspects in the area and notified police.
 
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit began tracking the fleeing suspects. Due to their efforts, both suspects were located and placed under arrest.
 
A 13 year old male and 18 year old male have been charged with: Break, Enter a place.
 
They were detained.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C11-170608
On August 13th, 2011 at approximately 9:30 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a commercial robbery at a motel located in the 3100 block of Portage Avenue.
 
The investigation has revealed that a lone male suspect entered the motel lobby and confronted a 53 year old female employee. The suspect demanded money at which time an undisclosed amount was relinquished.
 
No one was injured during the incident and the suspect fled on foot.
 
The suspect is described as: Male, 20-25 years of age, Caucasian in appearance and a slender build.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
