Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

 

  Saturday, August 13th, 2011 

 
STRONG ARM ROBBERY – ARREST C11-169126
On August 12th, 2011 at approximately 2:15 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit were patrolling in the area of Dufferin Avenue and King Street when they heard a female screaming.
 
As the officers approached, they observed two females and one male involved in a physical confrontation. It was later learned that the male suspect had previously confronted the two female victims while armed with a hammer and was attempting to rob them of their beer.
 
As a result of the incident, both females sustained injuries to their upper body due to being assaulted with the hammer. The suspect attempted to flee the area however he was pursued and apprehended by police.
 
Both female victims, 18 and 39 years of age were conveyed to hospital and treated for their injuries.
 
A 26 year old male has been charged with: Robbery with a Weapon x 2, Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose and Fail to Comply with Condition Recognizance x 4.
 
He was detained.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C11-169973
On August 13th, 2011 at approximately 2:15 a.m., uniform members responded to a commercial robbery at a convenience store located in the 800 block of Arlington Street.
 
The investigation has since revealed that a lone male armed with a knife entered the store and proceeded behind the counter to the cash till area where a 38 year old female employee was confronted. It was at this time the suspect produced a knife and began removing cash and cigarettes.
 
No was injured during the incident and the suspect fled with and undisclosed amount of cash and merchandise.
 
The suspect is described as: Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 5'5"-5'6" in height, muscular build and short dark hair.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION C11-170019
On August 13th, 2011 at approximately 3:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service including other emergency personnel responded to a serious single vehicle collision in the area of Jarvis Avenue and McPhillips Street.
 
The investigation has revealed that a Ford pick-up truck was observed travelling northbound on McPhillips Street near the underpass. The truck was subsequently driven up onto the curb and sidewalk causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof.
 
Motorists in the area attended to the scene at which time 911 was called. There were four male occupants in the vehicle at the time of the collision. One male fled the scene prior to police arrival.
 
Three of the occupants were conveyed to hospital, one critical and two unstable. A 20 year old male initially conveyed to hospital in critical condition has since succumbed to injuries sustained. The other two occupants have been treated and release from hospital.
 
The male who fled the scene has since been located and remains in police custody. Speed and alcohol are being explored as possible contributing factors.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.
 
 
HOMICIDE UPDATE – ARREST C11-97317
As previously released, on Saturday, May 14th, 2011 shortly before noon, Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a residence within the 1000 block of Edderton Avenue for a report of a suspicious death. 
 
Upon arrival officers located an adult female deceased within the home. The victim has been identified as Gina SWANSON, 33 years. The investigation has revealed that SWANSON was physically assaulted to the upper body and succumbed to injuries sustained.
 
An adult male has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Further details regarding the arrest and investigation will be released at a later time.
