Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

WORLD POLICE AND FIRE GAMES 2011- NEW YORK CITY
From August 25th through to September 5th, 2011 police officers and fire-fighters from around the world will be attending New York for the 2011 World Police and Fire Games. An anticipated 15,000 athletes will be attending to take part in 65 different events.
 
The games are held in a different location every two years. These games are especially significant as this is the 10th anniversary of the horrific events that occurred on September 11th. A number of memorials will be held and these games are based on two themes:
 
  • Remembrance for those who lost their lives that day; and
  • Gratitude for the support that was given to the city after that day.
Over 50 of our police officers and fire-fighters have been busy training for the games and will soon be leaving to compete in a wide variety of events, including:
 
  • Hockey (men's and women's)
  • Track and Field
  • Biathlon
  • Golf
  • Darts
  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Archery
  • Motocross
  • Cycling
  • Weight lifting
  • Judo
  • Rowing 
These members will be taking their own time and paying their own way to represent our emergency services.
 
We wish them all the best as we take on the world in the spirit of sport and camaraderie.

FREE VEHICLE SAFETY INSPECTION CLINIC
The Winnipeg Police Service Vehicle Inspection Section in conjunction with Manitoba Public Insurance Standards and Technologies will be offering a free motor vehicle inspection clinic on Sunday, August 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Manitoba Public Insurance Service Centre, 420 Pembina Highway. 
 
As a Public Service they will provide a vehicle safety inspection and an informational check sheet but will not issue offence notices or do any follow-up for re-inspects for defects or infractions.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service, including our partners in the transportation industry is committed to promoting safety for all motorists using the streets and highways throughout Winnipeg and Manitoba.
 
 
STABBING INVESTIGATION – UPDATE - ARREST C11-174014
As previously released, on Thursday, August 18th, 2011 at approximately 1:20 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members along with emergency medical responders were dispatched to an apartment block within the 400 block of Langside Street for a domestic related stabbing incident. 

Upon arrival, officers located a 30 year old female who had been stabbed to the upper body. 
 
Paramedics transported the female to the hospital in critical condition. She has since been upgraded to stable condition.
 
This investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit. 
 
During the altercation the male suspect also sustained multiple lacerations resulting in medical treatment being required.  
 
Officers located and arrested the suspect in hospital at approximately 2:15 p.m.
 
The 29 year old male has been charged with Aggravated Assault and detained.
 
 
MALE SHOT C11-174516
On August 19th, 2011 at approximately 1:50 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the sound of shots fired in the area of the 300 block of Langside Street.
 
The investigation has revealed that a firearm was discharged in the direction of a residence, subsequently striking a 19 year old male who was occupying a vehicle nearby.
 
The victim made his way to hospital where he was later interviewed by police. His condition was initially considered to be life-threatening, but has since been upgraded to stable condition.
 
No arrests have been made at this time.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY – ARREST C11-174131
On August, 18th, 2011 at approximately 4:25 p.m., Uniform members responded to a robbery in progress at a business in the 500 block of Mountain Avenue.
 
The investigation has revealed that a lone female suspect entered the store while armed with a knife. The suspect then confronted a 70 year old female clerk and began demanding money. The clerk fled to the rear of the business at which time the suspect attempted to pry open the cash register.
 
As the incident was in progress a 35 year old female customer entered the business. It was at this time the suspect confronted the female customer and demanded her property. She then fled the store unharmed.
 
Officers quickly responded and located the suspect still inside attempting to gain entry to the cash register. She was placed under arrest without incident and taken into custody.
 
Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation.
 
Gardina Faye PRINCE, 31 years has been charged with Robbery with a Weapon x 2, Utter Threat to Cause Death or Bodily Harm and Fail to Comply with Condition Recognizance as a result of her alleged involvement.
 
She has been detained.
