Winnipeg Police Service News Release

ANIMAL CRUELTY – C12-139140
On July 17, 2012 at approximately 12:30 a.m. emergency personnel responded to the 500 block of Pritchard Avenue in regards to the report of a Disturbance.
 
Investigation revealed that two female suspects, one armed with a bat, attended to a residence of a female who is known to them. As a result of an on-going dispute between the females, the armed suspect struck a three month old male cat which was owned by the female resident. The kitten sustained severe injuries. The female resident retreated to the safety of her residence at which time the second suspect took the bat and proceeded to break a window of the home. Both suspects then fled the scene.
 
The owner and kitten were taken to a veterinary clinic by the attending officers. The kitten was later transported to the Winnipeg Humane Society where, due to his injuries had to be euthanized.
 
At approximately 5:30 p.m. one of the suspects was located and arrested. The 23 year old female is facing the following charges:
 
·         Killing or Injuring of animals
·         Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
 
This suspect was later released on a Promise to Appear.
 
A warrant of arrest for the second suspect, a 23 year old female has been requested with the following charges:
 
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Mischief Under $5000.00
 
RETENTION POND – UPDATE - MALE IDENTIFIED  C12-138746
As previously released, on July 16, 2012, at approximately 2:00 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the 2400 block of King Edward Street (Albina Park) regarding a possible assault involving a teenage male.
 
Witnesses indicated that the male appeared distraught when he began yelling at passersby. At one point, the male began chasing two individuals who approached him offering assistance.
 
The male was observed to enter the water on at least two occasions when he swam to the middle of the pond. The male appeared to be having difficulty remaining above water.
 
Emergency services attended and began searching the area. The male was not located at that time.
 
On July 17, 2012 members of the Winnipeg Police Service Underwater Search and Recovery Unit re-attended the scene and commenced a search. Just before 1:00 p.m., officers recovered a body from the pond. The male has been positively identified and notifications have been made.
 
Autopsy results are pending.
 
The name of the deceased will not be released.
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY ARRESTS – C12-139232
On Monday, July 17, 2012 at approximately 3:30 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a report of a commercial robbery at a business in the 800 block of Cavalier Drive. 
 
The investigation revealed that two male suspects attended to this location, one armed with a weapon. The suspects entered the business, approached a 27 year old male employee and demanded money and merchandise. The items were provided after which time the suspects fled the store in a vehicle which had previously been reported stolen from rural Manitoba.
 
At approximately 5:20 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service Canine Unit observed the stolen vehicle in the 500 block of Rue St. Jean Baptiste. At this time the two suspects fled the area on foot. Merchandise from the business and the weapon used in the robbery were located within the vehicle.
 
At approximately 8:30 a.m. the two suspects were observed by uniform patrol members in the area of Provencher Boulevard & Des Meurons Street and taken into custody. 
 
Arrested were Clifford Gordon GUIMOND, 24 years & Travis Bradford COURCHENE, 28 years regarding their alleged involvement.
 
GUIMOND has been charged with the following offences:
  • Robbery With Weapon
  • Disguise With Intent
  • Possess Property Obtained by Crime over $5000.00
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
 
COURCHENE has been charged with the following offences:
  • Robbery With Weapon
  • Disguise With Intent
  • Possess Property Obtained by Crime over $5000.00 
Both were detained in custody.
 
 
MALE SHOT – C12-139264
On July 17, 2012 at approximately 5:30 a.m. members of the Winnipeg Police Service were dispatched to the 400 block of Burrows Avenue regarding reports of a male shot.
 
Upon arrival, members located at 15 year old male suffering from an injury consistent with being shot to the lower body. The male was transported in stable condition.
 
No arrests have been made at this time.
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact police at 204-986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
