MANITOBA INTEGRATED WARRANT APPREHENSION UNIT AND BRANDON POLICE SERVICE – MALE EXTRADITED

In 2009, Iain Kenneth SMY, 49 years, was arrested in Ontario by members of the Brandon Police Service for Sexual Assault X 9. The offenses occurred in the Brandon, Manitoba area between 1984 and 1988. The victims have been identified as males between the ages of 11 and 15 years of age.
 
After his arrest, Iain SMY was released on bail however, failed to attend Court in July 2010, which resulted in a Canada Wide Warrant being issued for his arrest. Investigators suspected that SMY may have fled the country.
 
The Manitoba Integrated Warrant Apprehension Unit, which was formed in September 2011, was requested to attempt to locate SMY, by Brandon Police Service.
 
Investigators from the Integrated Warrant Unit confirmed that SMY had indeed left Canada and fled to Europe. Working with Interpol and several other European Police Agencies, investigators were able to track SMY's travels while out of Canada. .
 
Shortly after 9:00 a.m., on April 30, 2012, Spanish National Police located Iain SMY in a residence in Malaga, Spain. SMY was taken into custody on the strength of the Manitoba Warrant. SMY was detained at a remand facility in Madrid, while an application for his extradition was made.
 
On June 19, 2012, SMY was returned to Winnipeg by members of the Manitoba Integrated Warrant Apprehension Unit and detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.
 
 
HOMICIDE C12-117641
On June 20, 2012, at approximately 7:00 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the vicinity of the first 100 block of Clayton Drive regarding a stabbing incident.
 
Attending members located a 26 year old female, identified as Kaila Latoya TRAN with serious upper body injuries. She was conveyed to hospital and has since succumbed to injuries sustained.
 
The investigation has revealed that a suspect was observed fleeing the area. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the suspect is described as:
 
  • Male
  • Early 20's
  • 5'6"- 6'00" tall
  • Short dark hair
  • Dark, olive skin
  • Slim build
The investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. An autopsy is pending.

MALE IN RIVER C12-117978
On June 20, 2012, at approximately 6:00 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the area of Queen Elizabeth Way near the Red River, as a result of two males jumping into the river.
 
The investigation has revealed that a 36 year old male and 37 year old male jumped into the river from the bridge. The 37 year old male was able to swim to shore; however the 36 year old male was last seen struggling in the middle of the river and is presumed drowned.
 
Recovery efforts are ongoing by members of the WPS Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.
  
 
STOLEN VEHICLE – ARRESTS C12-118259
On June 21, 2012, at approximately 1:45 a.m., patrolling members observed a suspicious vehicle with two occupants travelling in the area of Powers Street.
 
Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen from the Brandon, Manitoba area. Officers attempted a traffic stop in the area of Aberdeen Avenue and Powers Street at which time both suspects fled from the vehicle on foot.
 
Numerous police units, including Canine and Air1 attended to the scene. After a brief track by Canine Unit members, both suspects were taken into custody.
 
A 16 year old male and 17 year old male have been charged with numerous offences including Possess Property Obtained by Crime and Occupant of a Motor Vehicle without Consent.
 
They have been detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
 
 
INDECENT ACT C12-118040
On June 20, 2012, at approximately 8:15 p.m., police responded to the area of the 100 block of Maryland Street as a result of an indecent act.
 
A 21 year old female reported that she observed an unknown male staring at her while he performed an indecent act.
 
Attending members conducted a search of the area however a suspect was not located.
 
The suspect is described as: Caucasian, in his 30's, 6'00" tall, short brown hair, medium build, wearing: black rimmed glasses, dark shirt (possibly green) and dark plaid shorts.
 
The investigation is continuing.
