PUBLIC ADVISORY STOLEN VEHICLES DURING THE MONTH OF DECEMBER The Winnipeg Police Service is actively involved with a number of initiatives aimed at reducing auto theft. Since early 2004, there has been an approximate 85% reduction in auto theft within the City of Winnipeg. Although the reductions have been significant, more work need to be done and public assistance is required. During the month of December 2013, 166 vehicles were stolen. The circumstances are as follows: 52 (31%) of the vehicles were left running with the keys in the ignition when they were stolen 34 (20%) of the vehicles had keys stolen or missing (jackets, purses/backpacks left unattended in public areas) 15 (9%) of the vehicles were stolen by using spare keys that were left in the vehicle (glove compartment, console etc.) These scenarios represent 101 vehicles (60%) of the total vehicles stolen during the month of December. The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting vehicle owners to never leave their vehicles unattended, running or not, for any length of time while the keys are in the ignition. Always ensure that vehicles keys are secure and don't leave spare keys hidden within the vehicle. Fewer stolen vehicles on Winnipeg streets reduce the potential for serious collisions and harm to the public. The Winnipeg Police Service is committed to creating further reductions in order to protect public safety and the property of citizens.
