PUBLIC ADVISORY – TRANSIENT UNLICENSED PAVERS
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to advise members of the public about the possible return to the city of transient unlicensed asphalt pavers.  In years past, the Winnipeg Police Service became involved in the arrest of foreign nationals illegally doing work for cash, which in many cases was proven to be substandard.  In some circumstances, the victims were compelled to pay additional money when the workers threatened to leave the job incomplete.

Typically, the fraudulent contractor attended to the victim's residence and solicited the work in person.

To avoid becoming a victim of substandard work done by transient unlicensed workers, members of the public are encouraged to take the following precautions:

· Request to see a business license
· Conduct an online search of the company to determine credibility
· Agree to and sign a written contract
· Pay by cheque

If you believe that you have been approached and solicited by a travelling asphalt paver or other fraudulent contractors, you are asked to call the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit at 204-986-6231.
