CRIME PREVENTION TIP

 PERSONAL SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE
Basic tips about keeping safe at work:

  • Never give out personal information to anyone who asks.
  • Always monitor your workplace and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Never assume a stranger wandering in the building is a member of staff.  Politely asking, "may I help you" is an effective way to deter someone who is not authorized to be there
  • Never leave valuables (purses, laptops, cell phones) on desk if you are away from them.
  • Always keep money in a safe place.
  • Watch for signs of unusual behavior.  This is where it is important to trust your instincts.  If a client makes you feel uncomfortable, discuss the situation with a supervisor or co-worker you trust.
  • Develop a safety plan.  Know ahead of time what to do in an emergency.
  • Always have an escape route.  Do a risk assessment of your workplace.  Avoid going into isolated areas alone and plan emergency exits.  Know where safe places in the building are and the location of phones in case of an  emergency .
  • If you are working late or alone develop a check in system with a friend or family member who you can let know you are okay.  Give them instructions on what to do if you do not check in on time.  (i.e. calling the Police or manager.
