Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

                       Wednesday, February 13, 2013

TELEPHONE SCAM
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to advise the public of fraudulent telephone calls being made to unsuspecting potential victims.

An individual identifies himself as being from or associated with Manitoba Hydro, and then attempts to sell the victim a 'power saving device'.  The victim is then asked to provide a credit card number to expedite the order.

Manitoba Hydro offers no such product and does not solicit sale of such product over the phone.

  • If members of the public have received this type of call but have not provided a credit card number, we ask them to notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
  • If anyone has been victimized financially, they are asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and make a report to police.

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind the public not to provide credit card numbers or any other financial information under these types of circumstances.

Anyone receiving these types of telephone calls should hang up immediately.
