PUBLIC ADVISORY TELEPHONE SCAM
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to advise the public of fraudulent telephone calls being made to unsuspecting potential victims indicating that they have won a large sum of money (2.5 million dollars) and a luxury vehicle (Mercedes-Benz).
The victims are contacted by telephone by an individual who associates himself to a legitimate organization. The suspect has been consistently described as having a strong Jamaican accent. The potential victim is told that he/she must send between $199.00 and $399.00 in order to claim the prize.
The Winnipeg Police Service has received numerous complaints of this nature in the past and as recently as this past week.
- If members of the public receive this type of call but do not send money and are not victimized, we ask them to notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
- If anyone has been victimized financially, they are asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and make a report to police.
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind the public not to send any amount of money or provide credit card numbers or any other financial information under these types of circumstances. If someone has legitimately won a prize, there should be no cost to the winner.
Anyone receiving these types of telephone calls should hang up immediately.
