WINNIPEG POLICE SERVICE FLIGHT OPERATIONS UNIT RESPONDS TO 3445 INCIDENTS IN 2012
 
AIR1 INVOLVEMENT RESULTS IN 185 ARRESTS

 
Winnipeg, MB. The Winnipeg Police Service Flight Operations Unit responded to 3445 incidents in 2012, resulting in 185 arrests by ground patrol units.
 
AIR1 assisted with traffic stops, break and enter, robbery and assault incidents, just to name a few.
 
The Winnipeg Police Service Flight Operations Unit became operational in February 2011, supporting all operational and investigative service units in the detection of criminal acts and the apprehension of suspects. 
 
In 2012, AIR1 provided assistance to several other outside agencies including the RCMP, Morden Police Service and Manitoba Finance Special Investigations Unit.
 
The Flight Operations Unit is budgeted to fly 1000 hours per year, providing assistance with the following, weather permitting:

 

  • response to crimes in progress for aerial containment and investigation
  • infrared searches for suspects and evidence, and co-ordination of ground response
  • tracking and surveillance of suspect vehicles during police pursuits and subsequent co-ordination of ground resources
  • illumination of crime scenes, collision scenes, vehicle stops, search areas, disturbances, and foot pursuits
  • aerial searches for missing or lost persons
  • aerial reconnaissance and photography or videotaping of crime scenes, traffic collisions, high-risk incidents or remote areas
  • aerial platform for Emergency Services for major fires, environmental disasters, or other major incidents
  • Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) scans to provide evidence of illegal grow operations relating to drug investigations

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION – ARREST C11-269541
As previously released- on December 31, 2011, just after 5:00 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service members were dispatched to a residence located within the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue for a report of a shooting incident.
 
Upon arrival officers located a number of individuals within the residence.  Paramedics transported an injured adult male in critical condition, while a second person, an injured 30 year old female was transported in stable condition. 
 
Michael Warren SINCLAIR, 36 years of age succumbed to injuries sustained. 
 
The investigation has revealed that a male suspect attended to the rear of the residence while armed with a gun. It was at this time the victim, Michael Sinclair open the door and was confronted by the armed suspect. The firearm was discharged striking both victims.
 
The suspect fled the area.
 
As a result of a lengthy investigation by members of the Homicide Unit, Clayton CAMPEAU, 33 years of age was identified and arrested on February 4, 2013.
 
CAMPEAU has been charged with: 2nd Degree Murder and Attempted Murder due to his alleged involvement.
 
He was detained.
 
 
UPDATE – DECEASED FEMALE LOCATED C13-22105
As previously released- on February 2, 2013 at approximately 9:50 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 200 block of Doncaster Street to check on the well-being of an individual located.
 
Upon attending, members located a 33 year old deceased female outside a housing complex in the area. Her name will not be released.
 
The investigation continued by members of the Homicide Unit.
 
An autopsy has been completed and there are no signs of foul play. 
 
 
COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C13-23799
On February 4, 2013 at approximately 11:35 p.m., officers responded to a business located in the 300 block of Nairn Avenue regarding a commercial robbery incident.
 
The investigation has revealed that two male suspects entered the business while concealing their identity. An employee was confronted and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen from the till.
 
The suspects fled and police were notified. No one was injured as a result of the incident.
 
The suspects are described as:
 
1 – Male, 6'00" tall, medium build
2 – Male, 5'10" tall, skinny build
 
The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crime Unit. Anyone with further information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 204 986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204 786-TIPS (8477).
