Winnipeg Police Service News Release

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION- UPDATE           C12-26194
As previously released, on February 12th, 2012, at approximately 4:00 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service were dispatched to the area of Simcoe Street and Wellington Avenue regarding reports of an injured male.
 
Responding members, including other emergency personal located an adult male outside in the 600 block of Simcoe Street. He was transported to hospital in critical condition where he was later pronounced deceased.  The victim has been identified as Walter MADONICK, 55 years of Winnipeg. 
 
This investigation is continuing and a cause of death has not yet been determined.  
 
Investigators are requesting anyone with information regarding this matter to contact the Homicide Unit at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).
 
 
 
WARRANT EXECUTED- ARRESTS                C12-23994
On February 10th, 2012 as a result of an investigation by members of the Division 16 Community Support Unit, and assisted by both uniform officers and the Tactical Support Team a controlled drug and substance act search warrant was executed at residence in the area of Corydon Avenue and Centennial Street.
 
The following was seized:
 
  • Approximately 34 grams marihuana
  • Approximately 10 grams cocaine
  • $3035.00 Canadian cash and 2 cell phones
  • Digital scale and approximately 6 grams of a cutting agent
 
A 19 year old female and a 22 year old male were arrested and will be facing the following charges: 
 
-       Possessing substance for the purpose of trafficking- COCAINE
-       Possessing substance for the purposes of trafficking- MARIHUANA and 
-       Possess proceeds of crime
 
Both were released on promise to appear. 
 
 
PROVINCIAL "NO PHONE ZONE" CAMPAIGN
In the month of February the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police and Manitoba Public Insurance have partnered in the "No Phone Zone" campaign to promote the responsible and safe use of hand held electronic devices while operating motor vehicles. 
During the month of February Manitoba Public Insurance will be using print, and broadcast media to reinforce the responsible and safe use of hand held electronic devices while operating motor vehicles.  With funding from Manitoba Public Insurance the RCMP, Brandon Police Service and the Winnipeg Police Service have deployed additional resources to primarily focus on enforcement of sections of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act which cover the use of "hand held electronic devices" while operating a motor vehicle.
During the first five days of enforcement (February 6th to February 10th) the additional police resources were deployed province wide and have issued:
416 Provincial Offence Notices for section 215.1(2) "Use a hand held electronic device or cellular telephone while operating a motor vehicle"
The "No Phone Zone" campaign will continue throughout the Province of Manitoba during the month of February.
